This table gives each rashi name in English with symbol, the Hindi name, what the sign shows, the usual Western dates and the element. Click a sign name to open its own page with more detail, myths and typing help.

The dates are approximate. The exact day the Sun moves from one sign to the next can shift by a day from year to year.

Rashi Symbol in Hindi and Other Indian Languages

The rashi symbol is the same glyph in every language. Only the name changes. Many keyword spellings you see online are just different ways of writing one name, for example Kumbh, Kumbha and Kumba all mean the same rashi ♒, and Vrish or Vrishabh both point to ♉.

Spellings in English vary a lot (Meena, Meen, Meenam), so search engines and people use all of them. The symbol you copy is the same.

Why Your Rashi May Not Match Your Western Sign

Many Indians are surprised that their rashi is not the same as the zodiac sign in a magazine. There are two reasons.

1. Two zodiacs. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons. Vedic (Jyotish) astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars. Today the two are about 23 to 24 days apart, so the Vedic dates come later.
2. Moon sign, not Sun sign. In India, "your rashi" usually means the sign the Moon was in at birth (chandra rashi). The Western sign in newspapers is the Sun sign. The Moon changes sign every two to three days, so the two often differ.

These sidereal dates are rough guides. A traditional birth chart uses exact time and place.

Elements and Modalities of the Zodiac Signs

In astrology tradition, each sign has one of four elements and one of three modalities (qualities). In Indian texts the modalities are called chara (movable), sthira (fixed) and dwiswabhava (dual).

Planet Astrology Symbols: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Rahu and Ketu

Astrology charts also use planet symbols. People often search for the Saturn astrology symbol or the Jupiter symbol in astrology, so here they are in one table. Select and copy them from the table (they are not in the copy grid above).

Saturn ♄ (Shani): the Saturn planet astrology symbol looks like a small cross with a hook below it. The Vedic astrology Saturn symbol is the same ♄ when a glyph is used, and Shani rules Makar and Kumbh. Jupiter ♃ (Guru): the Jupiter astrology symbol looks like a number 4 with a curve; it is the same Jupiter planet astrology symbol in both systems. Mars ♂ (Mangal): the Mars astrology symbol is the circle with an arrow, the same mark used as the male sign, and Venus ♀ is the female sign; see male and female symbols for that story.

Rahu and Ketu are not physical planets, so the Rahu astrology symbol and Ketu astrology symbol are really markers for points in the sky. They are the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's path. Western charts mark them ☊ (north node, Rahu) and ☋ (south node, Ketu). Many Vedic astrology charts written in India simply use short names like Ra and Ke in Hindi or English instead of a symbol. Modern Western astrology also adds Uranus ♅, Neptune ♆ and Pluto ♇, which Vedic astrology does not use. For the Moon shapes, see moon symbols.

What About ⛎ Ophiuchus?

⛎ is the Ophiuchus symbol, the serpent bearer. Ophiuchus is a real constellation, and the Sun passes in front of it for part of the year. But it is not one of the 12 zodiac signs in either Western or Vedic astrology, which both divide the sky into 12 equal parts. ⛎ is available as an emoji on most phones, which is why people see it next to the 12 signs. If someone tells you there is a "13th sign", they mean this constellation, not a new rashi.

How to Type Zodiac Symbols on Any Device

None of the zodiac symbols has a standard Windows Alt code. Use one of these ways instead:

• Microsoft Word: type the code and press Alt+X. Codes run in order from 2648 (♈) to 2653 (♓), so 264C then Alt+X gives ♌.
• Windows: press Win+. to open the emoji panel and search "Aries" or any sign name.
• Mac: press Control+Command+Space, then search the sign name.
• Google Docs: Insert, then Special characters, then type the sign name.
• Android and iPhone: open the emoji keyboard and search "zodiac" or the sign name. On phones the signs usually appear as purple emoji squares.
• HTML: the codes run from ♈ to ♓. The info table on this page shows each one.
