The nazar symbol 🧿 is a blue eye bead that many people believe protects against the evil eye, the jealous or harmful look known in India as "buri nazar". Also called the najar symbol in everyday Hindi, it is hugely popular in bios, new car posts and baby photos with captions like "Nazar na lage 🧿".

Evil Eye Symbol Meaning
The belief in the evil eye is found in many cultures: the idea that a look full of envy can bring bad luck to a person, a child, a home or a new possession. The blue evil eye symbol is meant to "look back" and turn that harm away.
The bead shown in 🧿 comes from Turkey and the eastern Mediterranean, where it is called nazar boncuğu. It is made of glass in rings of dark blue, white, light blue and black, which is why people also call it the blue eye symbol. It is hung at doors, in cars and on babies' clothes. These are traditional beliefs; whether they work is a matter of personal faith.

Nazar Traditions in India
India has its own customs to ward off buri nazar. They are part of family tradition in many regions:
| Custom | What people do |
|---|---|
| Kaala teeka | A small black dot of kajal behind a baby's ear or on the cheek |
| Nimbu mirchi | A lemon and green chillies hung on a thread at shop doors and in vehicles |
| Nazar utarna | An elder circles salt, chillies or coins around a person and then throws them away |
| Nazar battu | A demon face or mask hung on a new house under construction, common in South India |
Today many young people simply add 🧿 to a photo of a new phone, car or house with "Nazar na lage" or "Tu nazar na lagaa". It is a playful, caring way of saying "may no bad eye fall on this".
