The cent symbol is ¢, a small c with a line through it, and you can copy it from the box above. It stands for one cent, which is one hundredth of a dollar, so 25¢ means twenty-five cents.
Indian readers see it mostly in American prices, maths word problems and older textbooks. Below you will learn when to use ¢ and when to write $0.25 instead, plus every way to type it.
What the Cent Symbol Means
The word cent comes from the Latin centum, meaning a hundred, the same root as "century" and "percent". One cent is 1/100 of a main unit.
- 100¢ = $1
- 50¢ = $0.50
- 5¢ = $0.05
The ¢ sign is used mainly with the US and Canadian dollar, and sometimes with other dollars. The euro also has cents, but they are usually written with a c or ct, or just as €0.50, rather than with ¢. In India, the matching small unit is the paisa, and there is no special sign for paise; we write ₹0.50 or 50 paise. See the rupee symbol page.
50¢ or $0.50? Writing Cents Correctly
| Style | Example | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Cent sign after the number | 75¢ | Amounts under a dollar on signs, ads and maths problems |
| Dollar sign with decimals | $0.75 | Bills, accounts, spreadsheets, anything formal |
| Words | 75 cents | Sentences and stories |
Two rules to remember:
- The ¢ sign goes after the number (75¢), while $ goes before ($0.75).
- Never mix them: "$0.75¢" is wrong.
Shops in the US often show prices like 99¢ to make an item feel cheaper, and word problems in maths books use ¢ to keep small sums simple, for example "A pencil costs 35¢ and an eraser costs 20¢. How much do both cost?" The answer is 55¢. For amounts of a dollar or more, use the dollar symbol: $1.25, not 125¢.
