The dirham symbol you can copy today is the code AED, the English short form Dh (or Dhs), or the Arabic د.إ, and all of them are in the box above. These are the ways people write the UAE dirham, the money of Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the rest of the United Arab Emirates.

Many Indians work in, visit or send money from the UAE, so this page explains which form to use where, what the new dirham sign announced in 2025 is, and why it may not show on your phone yet.

One dirham is divided into 100 fils. The AED symbol is the clearest choice for anything official, because it cannot be confused with any other currency. That makes AED the most useful dirham symbol text to copy.

People search for this in many ways: UAE currency symbol, UAE dirham symbol, AED currency symbol or simply the symbol of dirham. All of these point to the same three written forms. The plural does not change anything either: there is no separate dirhams symbol, so Dh and Dhs are just singular and plural short forms of the same dirham currency symbol. Until the new dirham sign symbol is supported everywhere, these text forms are the standard.

The New Dirham Symbol (2025)

In 2025 the Central Bank of the UAE introduced a new official symbol for the dirham, based on the Latin letter D with two horizontal lines. It gives the dirham its own sign, in the same way that ₹ did for India in 2010.

However, a new sign takes time to reach phones and computers. It needs a Unicode code point, fonts that draw it and keyboards that can type it. Until that support is widespread, the new dirham symbol is not something you can reliably copy and paste as text. That is why this page offers AED, Dh and د.إ, which work everywhere today.

If you design a poster or menu and want the new sign, use the official image from the UAE authorities rather than drawing your own.

How to Type the Dirham Symbol

  • AED, Dh, Dhs: just type the letters on any keyboard.
  • د.إ on a computer: there is no Alt code. Copy it from the box above, or add an Arabic keyboard (in Windows Settings under Time & language, or on Mac under Keyboard > Input Sources).
  • د.إ on a phone: add Arabic in your keyboard languages and switch with the globe key, or copy from this page.

Arabic is written right to left. When you paste د.إ next to numbers in an English document, the order may look odd. If that happens, write the amount in English style with AED instead.

Dirham Symbol Text: Writing AED Prices for Indian Readers

  • Write AED 1,500 or Dhs 1,500. Do not add "dirhams" after it.
  • When showing a rupee value as well, write it in brackets with the date of the rate: AED 1,500 (about ₹____ on [date]). There is no special conversion sign.
  • Do not confuse the UAE dirham with the Moroccan dirham, whose code is MAD.

For the Indian side, see the rupee symbol page and its guide to ₹1,00,000 style amounts, and the rupee symbol in keyboard guide if you need to type ₹ next to AED. This page gives general information only and shows no live exchange rates; check your bank or transfer service for the current AED to INR rate.

Neighbouring money such as the Saudi riyal and Kuwaiti dinar is listed on the currency symbols page.
