The islam symbol most people recognise is the star and crescent ☪, seen on mosque domes, Eid cards and the flags of several Muslim-majority countries. It is best understood as a cultural sign, and many Muslims prefer Arabic calligraphy, such as ﷽, as a more meaningful way to show their faith.

On this page you can copy ☪, the mosque 🕌, the Kaaba 🕋 and other Islamic symbol text. Tap any symbol in the grid to copy it, or use the Download PNG button to save islam symbol images and muslim symbol images with a transparent background.

What Is the Symbol of Islam?

Islam does not have one official symbol given in its scripture. Muslims focus on the worship of Allah alone, and many avoid using images in a religious way. Over centuries, though, some signs became closely linked with Muslim life:

SymbolNameMeaning and use
☪Star and crescentA widely known symbol of Muslim communities; it spread through its long use by the Ottoman Empire and now appears on flags such as those of Pakistan and Turkey
﷽Bismillah"In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful", written in one Arabic ligature
🕋KaabaThe House of Allah in Makkah, which Muslims face during prayer
🕌Mosque (masjid)The place of congregational prayer
۞Rub el HizbA mark used in copies of the Quran to show the start of a section
📿TasbihPrayer beads used to count words of remembrance (dhikr)

Crescent Moon Symbol and the Islamic Calendar

The crescent moon symbol is linked in people's minds with Islam partly because the Islamic calendar is lunar. Each month begins when the new crescent moon is seen, so the start of Ramadan and the day of Eid depend on moon sighting. That is why 🌙 and ☪ are so common on Ramadan and Eid greetings.

For crescent moon symbol text you can also use ☾ or ☽, which you can find on the moon symbols page. Simple greetings:

  • ☪ Eid Mubarak ☪
  • 🌙 Ramadan Kareem
  • ﷽ at the top of a letter or document

Allah Symbol and Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam in Arabic Symbol

Arabic calligraphy is the heart of Islamic art. Some phrases are available as single ligature characters:

  • ﷽: Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim. Copy it from the grid.
  • ﷲ: the word Allah in one ligature, often used when people ask for an allah symbol.
  • ﷺ: Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, meaning "peace and blessings of Allah be upon him", written after the name of Prophet Muhammad. In English it is often shortened to PBUH or SAW.

For a sallallahu alaihi wasallam in arabic symbol copy paste, select ﷺ above and copy it. These ligatures need a font that supports Arabic presentation forms. If you see a box, your device font is missing them, and many writers simply type the phrase in full.

Using Islamic Symbols Respectfully

  • Arabic calligraphy often contains the name of Allah or verses of the Quran, so many Muslims prefer it is not placed on the floor, shoes or throwaway items.
  • Use ☪ for cultural greetings, but do not describe it as a command of the faith.
  • Keep ﷽ at the start of a text, where it is traditionally written.

See other faiths on the religious symbols hub, or add 🙏 from the namaste symbol page for a thank-you message. The nazar symbol page covers 🪬, a hand amulet used across many cultures.
