The question mark symbol (?) is the punctuation mark placed at the end of a direct question, as in Where is my charger? On an English keyboard you type it with Shift+/, on the key just left of the right Shift key.

Question Mark Rules with Examples

  1. Direct questions end with ? Have you finished your homework?
  2. Indirect questions end with a full stop. She asked if I had finished my homework. There is no question being asked of the reader, only a report of one.
  3. Question tags take ? You are coming to the function, aren't you?
  4. Quoted questions: keep the ? inside the quotation marks when the quoted words are the question. Arjun asked, "Is the shop open?"
  5. Polite requests can end with ? or a full stop. Could you please send the file? Both styles are seen in Indian office emails; ? is the safer choice.
  6. No space before ? in English. Write Ready? not Ready ?
  7. One is enough. Write Really? not Really??? in formal writing.

How to Type a Question Mark on Any Device

  • Windows and Mac: Shift+/.
  • Alt code: Alt+63 on the number pad.
  • Inverted ¿: Alt+168 or Alt+0191 on Windows; Option+Shift+/ on Mac.
  • Word: for the special styles, type the code and press Alt+X: 2753 for ❓, 2049 for ⁉, 061F for ؟.
  • Google Docs: Insert > Special characters, then search "question".

Question Mark Variants: ¿ ‽ ⁉ ؟ Explained

  • ¿ Inverted question mark: Spanish opens a question with ¿ and closes it with ?. ¿Cómo estás? means "How are you?"
  • ‽ Interrobang (U+203D): one mark that joins ? and !, for a shocked question. You ate the whole cake‽ It is rare in formal writing. Type 203D then Alt+X in Word.
  • ⁉ and ⁈: the two marks side by side, mostly used in chats and as emoji.
  • ؟ Arabic question mark: a mirrored ? used in Arabic, Urdu and Persian, which are written right to left.
  • ? Fullwidth: a wider version that fits Chinese and Japanese text.
  • ⸮ Reversed question mark: an old mark sometimes suggested for irony; seen today only as decoration.

It is called a question mark. Some people also call it the question symbol or interrogation mark. It ends a direct question in English and many other languages.

How do I type a question mark on a laptop keyboard?

Hold Shift and press the / key, which is next to the right Shift key. If your keyboard layout is set to another language, the key may move; switch the layout back to English (India) or English (US).

Why does my phone show ? instead of a letter or emoji?

The font on that device cannot draw the character that was sent, so it shows ? or a box. Updating the phone or app usually fixes it. The original message is not damaged.
