How to Type Rupee Symbol in Keyboard on Windows (Shortcut)

Windows has a rupee symbol shortcut, but it only works with the right keyboard layout:

  • Ctrl+Alt+4, or
  • Right Alt (also called AltGr)+4

Use the 4 key in the top number row, not the number pad. If you press these keys and nothing happens, your PC is using the US layout. Add the English (India) layout first.

How to add the English (India) keyboard (Windows 10 and 11)

  1. Open Settings and go to Time & language.
  2. Open Language & region (on Windows 10 it is just Language).
  3. Click Add a language, search for English (India), select it and install it.
  4. Open the language options of English (India) and check that a keyboard such as English (India) or India is listed.
  5. Press Windows+Space to switch to the new layout. The language bar near the clock should show ENG IN.
  6. Now press Ctrl+Alt+4 in any app to type ₹.

Once the layout is added, the rupees symbol in keyboard shortcuts works in Word, Excel, browsers and chat apps alike.

Note: there is no standard Alt code for ₹, so Alt plus number pad tricks will not work for this sign. The Alt codes list covers the signs that do have one. You can also press Windows+. to open the emoji panel and look in its symbols section.

How to Insert Rupee Symbol in Word

MS Word gives you three easy ways to get the Indian rupee symbol in Word, even on a US keyboard. If you have wondered how to add rupee symbol in Word documents like invoices or letters, start with Method 1.

Method 1: 20B9 then Alt+X (fastest)

  1. Click where you want the sign.
  2. Type 20B9.
  3. Press Alt+X. The code turns into ₹.

Tip: if the code is right after a number or letter, Word may read the wrong characters. Type a space before 20B9, convert it, then delete the space.

Method 2: Insert > Symbol

  1. Go to the Insert tab and click Symbol, then More Symbols.
  2. Keep the font as (normal text) and set Subset to Currency Symbols.
  3. Select ₹ and click Insert. Word then keeps ₹ in the recent symbols list for next time.

Method 3: AutoCorrect for a personal shortcut

  1. Insert ₹ once using Method 1 and select it.
  2. Go to File > Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect Options.
  3. In Replace, type a short code such as (inr). The ₹ is already in the With box.
  4. Click Add and OK. Now typing (inr) gives ₹ every time.

Want the Rs symbol in Word instead? Just type Rs. as normal letters, or use code 20A8 then Alt+X for the single-character ₨ sign.

How to Insert the Rupee Symbol in Excel

In Excel you usually do not type ₹ by hand. You format the cells so Excel adds it to every number.

  1. Select the cells with amounts.
  2. Press Ctrl+1 to open Format Cells.
  3. On the Number tab, choose Currency (or Accounting).
  4. In the Symbol list, pick ₹ English (India).
  5. Click OK. A value of 150000 now shows as ₹1,50,000.00 with Indian comma grouping.

Other options:

  • Type =UNICHAR(8377) in a cell to get the sign as text.
  • Copy ₹ from this page or from Word (20B9 then Alt+X) and paste it into a cell or formula.

How to remove the rupee symbol in Excel

Select the cells, press Ctrl+1 and choose Number or General. The values stay the same, only the ₹ goes away. If ₹ was typed as text, use Find & Replace (Ctrl+H): find ₹, replace with nothing.

Rupee Symbol in Google Docs and Google Sheets

  1. In Google Docs, open Insert > Special characters.
  2. Type rupee in the search box.
  3. Click ₹ to insert it.

In Google Sheets, select the cells and use Format > Number > Custom currency, then search for Indian rupee. Pasting ₹ from this page also works in both apps.

Rupee Symbol in Mobile Keyboard (Android and iPhone)

Android (Gboard, Samsung and others)

  1. Open the keyboard and tap ?123.
  2. If your keyboard language is English (India), ₹ is usually shown directly on this page.
  3. If not, long-press the currency key (often $) to see ₹, €, £ and more. Some keyboards keep extra signs under =\<.

Tip: in Gboard, adding English (India) as a keyboard language makes ₹ the main currency key.

iPhone and iPad

  1. Tap 123.
  2. Long-press the currency key and slide to ₹.
  3. If your region is set to India, ₹ may already be the main currency key.

The positions differ slightly between keyboard apps, so if you cannot find it, the copy box above is always one tap away.

How to Type the Rupee Symbol on a Mac

  1. Click where you want the sign.
  2. Press Control+Command+Space to open the Character Viewer.
  3. Type rupee in the search box and double-click ₹.

The US Mac layout has no Option-key shortcut for ₹. If you add an Indian keyboard layout in System Settings > Keyboard > Input Sources, it offers an Option-key combination for ₹; open the on-screen Keyboard Viewer and hold Option to see which key it is on your layout.
