The exclamation mark symbol (!) is the punctuation mark that shows strong feeling, such as surprise, joy, anger or a sharp warning: We won the match! You type it with Shift+1. In school grammar it is also called the exclamatory symbol, because it ends an exclamatory sentence.

Copy the plain ! from the box above, or tap the grid to copy ‼, ❗, the Spanish ¡ or the interrobang ‽. The Download PNG button saves a transparent image for warning posters and slides. Read on for grammar rules with examples, the maths and coding meanings, and typing steps for each device.

When to Use the Exclamation Symbol in English

Use ! at the end of a sentence that expresses a strong emotion or a forceful command.

TypeExample
Exclamatory sentence (What / How)What a beautiful rangoli! How tall you have grown!
InterjectionWow! Oh no! Hurray!
Strong commandStop! Get out of the water!
WarningDanger! High voltage.
Greeting with feelingHappy Diwali!

Rules to remember:

  1. A calm command does not need !. Please close the door. is correct.
  2. Use only one ! in formal writing. Congratulations!!! is fine in a chat, not in an application.
  3. Keep it rare in letters and reports. Strong words should carry the feeling, not a row of marks.
  4. Do not put a full stop after it: Well done!. is wrong.

The Symbol ! in Maths and Coding

When you see the symbol ! after a number in maths, it means factorial: multiply the number by every whole number below it, down to 1.

  • 3! = 3 × 2 × 1 = 6
  • 5! = 5 × 4 × 3 × 2 × 1 = 120
  • 0! = 1 (this is a rule, worth remembering for exams)

Students meet factorials in permutations and combinations in Class 11. In Excel, =FACT(5) returns 120.

In programming, ! usually means not. So != means "not equal to" and !done means "not done". In written maths, use the proper ≠ sign from the not equal to symbol page instead.

How to Type the Exclamation Mark Symbol

  • Windows and Mac: Shift+1.
  • Alt codes: Alt+33 gives !, Alt+19 gives ‼, and Alt+173 or Alt+0161 gives ¡. Use the number pad with Num Lock on; results can differ a little between apps.
  • Mac: Option+1 types the inverted ¡.
  • Word: type the code then press Alt+X: 2757 for ❗, 203D for ‽, 203C for ‼.
  • Google Docs: Insert > Special characters, search "exclamation".
  • Android: on most Android keyboards ! is on the ?123 page; some also show it on long-press of the full stop key.
  • iPhone: tap 123 and it is on the first symbols page.

❗ and ❕ have no standard Alt code. Use the Windows emoji panel (Windows+.), Character Viewer on Mac (Control+Command+Space) or copy them here.

Exclamation Mark Styles: ¡ ‼ ❗ ‽

  • ¡ Inverted exclamation mark: Spanish starts an exclamation with ¡ and ends it with !. ¡Hola! means "Hello!"
  • ‼ Double exclamation mark: a single character with two marks; common in chats and on phone emoji keyboards.
  • ❗ ❕ Ornaments: bold red or white marks, used to draw attention in notices, Instagram captions and to-do lists.
  • ‽ Interrobang: a blend of ? and ! for a surprised question. You walked 20 km‽
  • ! Fullwidth: the wider version used with Chinese and Japanese text.

To ask a question with surprise, you can also write ?! or !?, which is more common than ‽. The question mark symbol page explains question rules. For safety signs, see our warning symbols collection.

Practice: Exclamatory or Not?

Decide which sentences need ! and which need a full stop.

  1. What a lovely surprise (needs !)
  2. The train leaves at 6 pm (needs a full stop)
  3. Watch out, the floor is wet (needs !)
  4. How kind of you to help (needs !)
  5. Please submit the form by Friday (needs a full stop)

Notice that sentences starting with What a or How that are not questions usually end with !. To compare with the plain sentence ending, read about the full stop symbol, or see every mark in our punctuation marks guide and symbol names list.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ! symbol called?

It is called an exclamation mark, or exclamation point in American English. School grammar books also call it the sign of exclamation or exclamatory symbol.

What does ! mean after a number, like 4!?

It means factorial. 4! = 4 × 3 × 2 × 1 = 24. You will use it in permutations, combinations and probability.

How do I type the double exclamation mark ‼?

On Windows, hold Alt and type 19 on the number pad. In Word, type 203C and press Alt+X. On a phone, find ‼ in the emoji keyboard or copy it from the grid above.

Can I use an exclamation mark in a formal letter or email?

It is best to avoid it, except perhaps once in a warm closing line such as "Thank you so much for your help!" Too many marks can look careless or rude in office mail.

What does != mean?

In most programming languages, != means "not equal to". In printed maths, the correct sign is ≠.
