The standard email symbol is โœ‰, a simple closed envelope, and it is placed before an email address on resumes, visiting cards and email signatures. The colourful ๐Ÿ“ง is its emoji cousin. Tap any envelope in the grid to copy it, or press Download PNG to get a transparent email symbol png or mail symbol png for your design.

This guide explains which mail symbol to pick, how to insert the email symbol in Word (three ways, including a Wingdings trick), and how the @ sign fits into an email address.

Which Mail Symbol to Choose

SymbolStyleUse it for
โœ‰Plain email symbol text, one colourPrinted resumes, letterheads, formal cards
๐Ÿ–‚Envelope back, outlineMinimal designs (some fonts lack it)
๐Ÿ“งEmoji with an @ on itDigital CVs, Instagram bios, websites
๐Ÿ“ฉEnvelope with down arrow"Send us a message", "DM for details"
๐Ÿ“จIncoming envelope"New mail", newsletter sign-ups
๐Ÿ“ฌMailbox with raised flagPostal address, "you've got mail"

The letter symbol โœ‰ is the most widely recognised symbol of email. It also works for a postal letter, so you can use it for both.

Email Symbol for Resume and Visiting Cards

A clean mail id symbol line looks like this:

  • โœ‰ aman.verma@example.com
  • ๐Ÿ“ง hello@shreeprints.in | ๐Ÿ“ž +91 98xxx xxxxx
  • โœ‰ Email: neha.joshi@example.com (with label, best for resume software)

Tips for a mail symbol for resume use:

  • Use a professional address, ideally your name, not a nickname.
  • Keep all icons in one style, all text (โœ‰ โ˜Ž) or all emoji (๐Ÿ“ง ๐Ÿ“ž).
  • Leave the word "Email" in place if you apply through job portals; some resume software ignores symbols.
  • Make the address a clickable mailto link in digital PDFs.

How to Insert Email Symbol in Word

Code then Alt+X

  1. Type 2709 where you want โœ‰ (or 1F4E7 for ๐Ÿ“ง).
  2. Press Alt+X.

Insert > Symbol

  1. Go to Insert > Symbol > More Symbols.
  2. Font: Segoe UI Symbol. Character code: 2709.
  3. Click Insert, then Close.

Wingdings envelope

  1. Type an asterisk *.
  2. Select it and set the font to Wingdings. It changes into an envelope.

In Microsoft 365 you can also go to Insert > Icons and search "email" or "mail" for a scalable graphic. These steps also cover the mail symbol in Word and the email symbol for resume in Word. Remember to export as PDF if you use Wingdings, so the envelope does not turn back into * on someone else's computer.

Email Symbol in Excel, Google Docs and Phones

  • Excel: Insert > Symbol, Segoe UI Symbol, code 2709. Alt+X is a Word feature and does not work in Excel.
  • Google Docs: Insert > Special characters, search "envelope".
  • Windows: Windows+. and search "mail".
  • Mac: Control+Command+Space, search "envelope".
  • Android and iPhone: search "mail" or "envelope" in the emoji keyboard.
  • HTML: ✉ for โœ‰.

The envelope characters have no Alt code.

The @ Sign and Writing Email IDs Safely

Every email id symbol line contains @, read as "at" (in India often "at the rate"). On Windows, type it with Shift+2 on most keyboards, or Alt+64 on the numeric keypad. Its history and uses are on the at the rate symbol page.

Some people write "name [at] example [dot] com" on public web pages. This makes it a little harder for spam bots that collect addresses automatically. It is less convenient for real readers, so use it only on public pages, not on a resume.
