What each weather symbol means
Weather apps and TV forecasts (including the kind of maps you see from the India Meteorological Department) use similar pictures. The exact style changes from app to app, but the ideas are the same:

Rain symbol, umbrella symbol and the rainy weather symbol
For the monsoon there are three good choices. ☂ is a closed text umbrella symbol. ☔ is an umbrella with raindrops and is the usual rainy weather symbol in chats. 🌧 is a cloud with rain, the one most weather apps use for a rain forecast.

Thunder symbol and lightning symbol
The thunder symbol most people want is ⛈ (cloud with lightning and rain), which means a thunderstorm. The lightning symbol ⚡ on its own is called "high voltage sign" in Unicode, so it also appears on electrical warnings and means "danger, electricity". In captions it can mean speed, energy or excitement.

Snowflake symbol and AC remote symbols
The snowflake symbol ❄ means cold, winter or freezing. On air conditioner remotes in India you will see a few weather symbols used as modes:
- ❄ Cool: normal cooling mode.
- ☀ Heat: warm air mode (only on units that can heat).
- 💧 Dry: removes moisture, useful on humid monsoon days.
- Fan icon: fan only, no cooling.
Remote designs differ between brands, so check your manual. The snowman ☃ and the snow symbol ❄ are also nice for Christmas or hill-station photos.
Sun symbol and the sun in astrology
The sun symbol ☀ stands for light, warmth, energy and a happy mood. In India the Sun is also honoured as Surya, and many families offer water to the rising sun as a daily tradition.
In astrology, the symbol of sun is a different mark: a circle with a dot in the middle, ☉. This is the sun astrology symbol used in birth charts. In Vedic astrology the Sun (Surya) is one of the nine grahas and is believed to relate to the self and confidence. These are beliefs, not science.
