The peace symbol โ˜ฎ is a circle with a line down the middle and two lines slanting down, and today it is understood around the world as a sign of peace. It began in Britain in 1958 as a badge against nuclear weapons and later spread to peace movements everywhere.

Tap โ˜ฎ in the copy box to copy it, or choose the V sign โœŒ, the dove ๐Ÿ•Š or the white flag ๐Ÿณ from the grid. Need a picture? The Download PNG button gives peace symbol images with a transparent background.

Who Designed the Peace Sign Symbol?

The peace sign symbol โ˜ฎ was designed by Gerald Holtom, a British artist, in 1958 for the British movement for nuclear disarmament. He built it from two flag signals of semaphore, the system of sending messages with two flags:

  • The letter N (for Nuclear): both arms held down at an angle, which forms the two slanting lines.
  • The letter D (for Disarmament): one arm straight up and one straight down, which forms the vertical line.

The circle around them holds the two letters together. Holtom did not copyright the design, so anyone could use it freely, which helped it spread across the world.

Peace Emoji: โ˜ฎ๏ธ, โœŒ๏ธ and the Dove Emoji ๐Ÿ•Š

If you want an emoji for peace, you have three main choices. Their meanings are informal, so pick the one that fits your message:

EmojiNameOften used for
โ˜ฎ๏ธPeace symbol (added in Emoji 1.0)Peace, no war, calm vibes
โœŒ๏ธVictory hand (one of the original emojis)The peace sign emoji in photos, "peace out" when saying bye, or victory
๐Ÿ•ŠDove (one of the original emojis)Peace, hope, calm, and in condolence messages

Dove emoji meaning: the dove emoji ๐Ÿ•Š shows a white bird, often with an olive branch. It stands for peace and hope. Many people also add it to messages of sympathy, such as "Om Shanti ๐Ÿ•Š" or "Rest in peace ๐Ÿ•Š", so it is better not used as a casual joke.

Peace emoji text: โ˜ฎ and โ˜ฎ๏ธ are the same character. The second one carries a hidden marker asking the phone to draw it as a coloured emoji. If you want a plain peace emoji text version that matches your font, copy โ˜ฎ without the marker from the grid. For a peace emoji copy and paste, tap any symbol above, or search "peace" or "dove" in your emoji keyboard. More meanings are on our emoji meanings page and the emoji hub.

Which Bird Is a Symbol of Peace?

The dove is the bird of peace. A white dove peace symbol, often with an olive branch in its beak, appears on posters, school projects and peace day cards. In India the dove is the same bird family as the kabutar (pigeon), and releasing white doves or pigeons is a common gesture at peace events.

To type the peace dove symbol, use ๐Ÿ•Š from the grid. On some phones it shows as a plain grey bird; others show it with an olive branch.

Symbol of Peace in India

In India, peace has its own familiar signs:

  • White colour: the white band in the national flag is described as standing for peace and truth. See national symbols of India.
  • Mahatma Gandhi's charkha: the spinning wheel became a sign of self-reliance and the non-violent freedom struggle. Gandhi Jayanti, 2 October, is also observed as the International Day of Non-Violence.
  • Shanti: prayers often end with "Om Shanti Shanti Shanti", a wish for peace. See the om symbol page.
  • Folded hands ๐Ÿ™: a calm greeting, explained on the namaste symbol page.

Japanese Peace Symbol and the V Sign

In Japan, the word for peace is written ๅนณๅ’Œ (heiwa), and the single character ๅ’Œ (wa) means harmony. People sometimes use these as a japanese peace symbol in art or text. The V sign โœŒ is also very popular in photos in Japan and across Asia, where it is called the "peace sign" pose.

For a unity symbol, people often use ๐Ÿค (handshake) or hands of different skin tones together. A calm symbol or peace of mind symbol line might be "๐Ÿ•Š ๐ŸŒฟ โ˜ฎ".
