Symbol Names People Mix Up
Some symbols look alike or have names that sound the same. Here is how to tell them apart.
- / and \: the forward slash leans right, like in km/h and website links. The backslash leans left and is used mostly in Windows file paths. See the slash symbol page.
- - and _: the hyphen sits in the middle of the line. The underscore sits on the bottom, as in file_name.
- ' and `: the apostrophe is straight (or curly in Word). The backtick slants and is used in coding, not in normal writing.
- # "pound": in the US, # is often called the pound sign. In India and the UK, "pound" usually means £, the British currency. Call # "hash" to be clear.
- * and ★: the asterisk is a small keyboard star used for notes. The solid star ★ is a decoration symbol.
How to Read Symbols Aloud in Email IDs and Passwords
When you share an email address or a website on the phone, say each symbol by its name. Here are some easy examples.
| You see | Say it like this |
|---|---|
| priya_sharma@gmail.com | priya underscore sharma at the rate gmail dot com |
| www.example.in/help | w w w dot example dot in slash help |
| Rohit-22# | capital R, rohit, hyphen, two two, hash |
| A&B Traders | A and B traders (the & is read as "and") |
In Indian offices, the @ symbol name in email is almost always said as "at the rate". Outside India, most people simply say "at". Both are correct.
Symbol Names in Maths
Some keyboard symbols have a special name or job in maths class.
- ^ is read as "to the power of". 2^3 means 2 × 2 × 2 = 8. The ^ symbol name in maths and computers is still "caret", but you read it aloud as "power".
- * is used for multiply in Excel and coding: =A1*B1. On paper, use × from the multiplication symbol page.
- / means divide in Excel and calculators: 10/2 = 5.
- < and > are "less than" and "greater than". Tip: the open mouth always faces the bigger number.
- ~ can mean "about" or "approximately" in casual notes, while ≈ is the proper maths sign.
For many more, see the math symbols list.
How to Type These Symbols
Most keyboard symbols are on the number row or next to Enter. Hold Shift to get the upper sign printed on a key. For example, Shift+2 gives @ on most Indian and US layouts.
If a key is missing or broken on Windows, you can use an Alt code: hold Alt and type the number on the numeric keypad with Num Lock on. A few examples: Alt+64 gives @, Alt+35 gives #, Alt+94 gives ^, Alt+124 gives | and Alt+92 gives \. The full list is on our Alt code symbols page.
On phones, tap ?123 on most Android keyboards, then =\< for more signs. On iPhone, tap 123 and then #+=.
