The Only Sign That Is an Object
Every other sign is a living being: a ram, twins, a lion, a maiden, fish. Libra is a pair of scales. There is a reason. In very old star maps, the stars of Libra were drawn as the claws of the scorpion next door. Even today the two brightest stars of Libra have Arabic names, Zubenelgenubi and Zubeneschamali, that mean the southern claw and the northern claw.
By Roman times the claws had become a separate sign, the scales. In Western astrology, Libra begins at the September equinox, when day and night are almost equal in length, a natural fit for a symbol of balance. Some people even read ♎ as the Sun half set on the horizon at that time of year.

Tula Rashi Symbol in Indian Astrology
The Tula rashi symbol is the same ♎ glyph, and so is the simple Tula symbol on an Indian calendar. In Indian pictures Tula is usually shown as a man holding a balance, often a trader at a market. Names you may see:

Dates: Western books give Libra about 23 September to 22 October. In the Vedic (sidereal) system the Sun is in Tula from about 17 October to 15 November, roughly 23 to 24 days later. Libra in Astrology Tradition
Libra is an air sign and a cardinal (chara) sign, ruled by Venus (Shukra), written ♀. In astrology belief, Libra is said to value fairness, harmony and good company, and to find decisions hard.
