What the ♈ Glyph Shows: A Ram's Horns
Look at ♈ closely. It is a V shape whose two arms curl outward at the top. Those curls are the horns of a ram, seen from the front. That is why the Aries symbol animal is the ram (in Hindi, mendha), and why the ram emoji 🐏 is often used as a ram symbol for this sign.
Some people also see a nose and eyebrows in the shape, or a small sprout pushing out of the soil. These are later readings. The ram is the traditional meaning.

The Ram in Myth and in the Night Sky
In Greek myth, Aries is linked with the ram with the golden fleece, the same fleece that Jason later went to find. The ram was said to have carried two children to safety, and was then placed among the stars.
The constellation itself is small and not very bright. Its brightest star is Hamal. In the Indian nakshatra system, the first nakshatra, Ashwini, lies in this part of the sky. Over two thousand years the stars have drifted against the seasons, which is exactly why the Western and Vedic dates above no longer line up.
