An arrow symbol points the reader somewhere: forward, back, up, down or around. This page collects the arrow symbol text characters people use most, from the simple → and ← to double arrows like ⇒, bold ➜, curved ↪ and triangle pointers like ▶.
Every arrow in the grid is real text, so it pastes into Word, Excel, chats, bios and websites. Tap one to copy it. Further down you will find each group explained, what double arrows mean in maths, and the quickest way to type arrows on a laptop or phone. For a single direction, jump to the right arrow, left arrow, up arrow or down arrow page.
Types of Arrow Symbols at a Glance
Arrows fall into a few easy groups. Use this table to find the right arrow mark symbol, then tap it in the grid above.
| Group | Symbols | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Simple arrows | → ← ↑ ↓ ↔ ↕ | Notes, steps, directions |
| Diagonal arrows | ↗ ↘ ↙ ↖ | Trends, maps, growth charts |
| Double arrows | ⇒ ⇐ ⇑ ⇓ ⇔ | Maths logic, strong emphasis |
| Long arrows | ⟶ ⟵ | Equations and flow charts |
| Heavy and decorative | ➜ ➔ ➤ ➡ ⬅ ⬆ ⬇ | Bios, buttons, headings |
| Curved and hook arrows | ↩ ↪ ➥ ➦ ⤴ ⤵ | Reply, return, "see below" |
| Circle arrows | ↺ ↻ | Refresh, repeat, rotate |
| Swap arrows | ⇄ ⇆ | Exchange, two-way transfer |
| Triangle pointers | ▶ ◀ ▲ ▼ | Play, menus, price up or down |
Direction Arrow Symbol Pages
Each main direction has its own page with more variants, meanings and examples:
| Direction | Main symbol | Alt code | Read more |
|---|---|---|---|
| Right side arrow symbol | → | Alt+26 | Right arrow symbol |
| Left side arrow symbol | ← | Alt+27 | Left arrow symbol |
| Upper arrow symbol (top) | ↑ | Alt+24 | Up arrow symbol |
| Below arrow symbol (down) | ↓ | Alt+25 | Down arrow symbol |
Two more simple arrows have Alt codes too: ↔ is Alt+29 and ↕ is Alt+18. The triangles ▲ and ▼ are Alt+30 and Alt+31. These come from the old DOS character table, so hold Alt, type the number on the numeric keypad with Num Lock on, then let go. A few programs ignore these low codes; if nothing appears, use one of the other methods below. All Alt codes are listed on our Alt codes page.
Double Arrow Symbol Meaning: ⇒ and ⇔ in Maths
A double arrow symbol has two lines in its shaft. Copy any double arrow symbol text from the grid above. In everyday notes a double arrow simply looks stronger than a single arrow, but in maths and logic it has an exact meaning:
- ⇒ implies: "x = 2 ⇒ x² = 4" means if x is 2, then x squared is 4. The reverse need not be true, since x could also be −2.
- ⇐ is implied by: the same idea read from right to left.
- ⇔ if and only if: both sides imply each other. "x + 3 = 5 ⇔ x = 2".
Students sometimes use → and ⇒ as if they were the same. In a maths answer, keep ⇒ for "implies" and → for things like "tends to" (as in x → 0) or a mapping between sets. In chemistry, a single → is the usual arrow between reactants and products. More signs like these are on the math symbols page.
How to Type an Arrow Symbol in Word, Excel and on Phone
Shortcut key for arrow symbol in Word
Word for Windows usually has AutoCorrect rules for arrows. Type these and press Space:
-->becomes →<--becomes ←==>becomes ⇒<==becomes ⇐<=>becomes ⇔
If this does not happen on your computer, check File > Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect Options. For any other arrow, type its code and press Alt+X: for example 2192 for →, 21D2 for ⇒ or 279C for ➜. The full list of codes is in the info table under the grid.
Arrow symbol in Excel
Use a formula: =UNICHAR(8594) gives →, =UNICHAR(8593) gives ↑ and =UNICHAR(8595) gives ↓. Or go to Insert > Symbol and choose "Arrows" in the Subset list.
Mac, Android and iPhone
- Mac: arrows have no Option key shortcut. Press Control+Command+Space and search "arrow".
- Android: some keyboards show a few arrows on the symbol pages (tap ?123, then =\<). If yours does not, search "arrow" in the emoji panel.
- iPhone: the emoji keyboard has arrows like ➡️ and ⬆️. For plain → in notes, copy it once from here and save a Text Replacement.
Arrow Text Symbols for Notes, Bios and Resumes
Arrows make short text easier to scan. A few ideas that work well:
- Study notes: "Photosynthesis → glucose + oxygen", "Cause ⇒ effect".
- Menu paths: "Settings → Privacy → Location" is clearer than a long sentence.
- Bios: "New video every Friday ➜" or "Shop link ↓". Bold arrows like ➤ and ➜ stand out in a stylish bio; for more ideas see aesthetic symbols.
- Resumes: use a simple ➤ or ▶ as a bullet for achievements, but keep it to one style, and keep it plain for formal job applications.
- Price changes: "Shares ▲ 1.2%", "Onion price ▼".
Small arrows like → suit body text; heavy ones like ➡ suit headings. A long arrow ⟶ looks better in equations where a short one feels cramped.
Arrow Symbol PNG vs Text, and Common Mistakes
Copy arrows as text whenever possible. Text arrows match your font size and colour, and the person reading on another phone sees the same arrow. If you need an arrow symbol PNG for a poster or slide image, use the Download PNG button; it saves the arrow on a transparent background.
Watch out for these slips:
- Using -> in a printed document. It works in plain chats, but a real → looks cleaner.
- Mixing styles. → in one line and ➜ in the next looks careless in a report.
- Emoji arrows in formal files. Arrows like ➡️ may show in colour on phones but as plain shapes in print.
- Confusing ▲ with the Greek delta Δ. They look similar; see the delta symbol page if you need the maths letter.
