Keep this degree symbol keyboard shortcut table handy. The sections below explain each method step by step.
How to Type Degree Symbol in Keyboard (Windows)
To get the degree symbol on keyboard shortcuts in Windows, use a desktop keyboard with a number pad on the right:
- Press Num Lock so its light is on.
- Click where you want the symbol.
- Hold down the left Alt key.
- Type 0176 on the number pad (not the number row above the letters).
- Let go of Alt. The ° appears.
Alt+248 also works in most apps. It comes from the old DOS code table, while Alt+0176 comes from the Windows table, so if one gives a wrong character in some app, try the other.
Where is the degree symbol on a laptop keyboard?
There is no degree key on a normal Indian or US laptop keyboard. Alt codes need a number pad, which many laptops do not have. Use one of these instead:
- Emoji and symbol panel: press Windows+. (Windows key and full stop), click the symbols tab (the Ω icon), and find ° in the punctuation or maths lists.
- Hidden number pad: some laptops have small numbers printed on the U, I, O, J, K, L keys. Turn it on with Fn and Num Lock, then use the Alt code.
- Character Map: search "Character Map" in the Start menu, find °, click Select, then Copy.
- Copy and paste from the box at the top of this page.
How to Insert Degree Symbol in Word
Here is how to add degree symbol in Word using four methods. Pick whichever is easiest for you.
Method 1: Code then Alt+X (fastest)
- Type the number, for example 45.
- Type 00B0 right after it, so it reads 4500B0.
- Press Alt+X. Word turns 00B0 into °, giving 45°.
If the number and code join wrongly, select just the code before pressing Alt+X, or put a space first and delete it later.
Method 2: Alt code
Hold Alt and type 0176 on the number pad. This works in MS Word just like in any other Windows app.
Method 3: Insert > Symbol
- Go to the Insert tab and click Symbol, then More Symbols.
- Set Font to (normal text) and Subset to Latin-1 Supplement.
- Click ° and press Insert. Next time it sits in the recently used list.
Method 4: Make your own AutoCorrect
Insert ° once and select it. Go to File > Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect Options. In "Replace" type a short word you never use, such as deg1, and click Add. Now typing deg1 and a space writes ° anywhere in Word.
For the degree celsius symbol in Word, type ° then a capital C. These same methods work in Outlook, and the Alt code and Insert > Symbol methods also work for the degree symbol in PPT (PowerPoint).
How to Add Degree Symbol in Excel
- Alt code: click the cell (or the formula bar), hold Alt and type 0176 on the number pad.
- Formula: =CHAR(176) returns °. To join it with a value in A2, use =A2&CHAR(176)&"C". On Windows and Mac you can also use =UNICHAR(176).
- Insert > Symbol: on the Insert tab, click Symbol, choose °, then Insert.
- Number format (best for data): select the cells, press Ctrl+1, choose Custom and type
0"°C"or0.0°. The cell shows 37 °C but still holds the number 37, so sums and charts keep working.
Why the last method matters: if you type 37°C straight into a cell, Excel treats it as text and cannot add or average it. The custom format avoids that.
Degree Symbol on Mac, Google Docs, Phone and LaTeX
- Mac: Option+Shift+8 gives °. Do not pick the smaller ring accent ˚ by mistake; it is a different character. Control+Command+Space opens the Character Viewer if you need ℃ or ℉.
- Google Docs: Insert > Special characters, type "degree" in the search box and click °. Google Sheets has no menu for this, so use =CHAR(176) or paste it.
- Android: on most Android keyboards tap ?123, then =\< to see the second symbol page where ° usually sits. On many keyboards you can also long-press 0.
- iPhone and iPad: tap 123, then press and hold 0 and slide to °.
- LaTeX: in maths mode write
$90^\circ$. In text use\textdegree. The gensymb package gives\degreeand\celsius, and siunitx is good for units like 37 °C. - HTML: write
°or°.
Degree Celsius Symbol, Fahrenheit Symbol and Kelvin
Here is how the degrees symbol is used with temperature. The usual temperature symbol is the degree sign followed by a letter:
| Scale | How to write | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Celsius (centigrade) | °C | Normal body temperature is about 37 °C |
| Fahrenheit | °F | 98.6 °F is the same as 37 °C |
| Kelvin | K, with no degree sign | Water freezes at 273.15 K |
The degree centigrade symbol is the same as the degree Celsius symbol: °C. "Centigrade" is the older name for the same scale.
Unicode also has single characters ℃ and ℉. They look neat but are mainly for East Asian text. Most style guides prefer ° plus C or F, because search engines, screen readers and spell-check handle normal letters better. To convert: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32. So 40 °C × 9/5 + 32 = 104 °F.
Spacing: the international SI style puts a space between the number and °C (25 °C), but no space for angles (25°). In everyday Indian writing "25°C" is also common. Be consistent within one document.
Look-alikes: Degree Sign vs º and ˚
Three characters look almost the same, but only one is the true degree sign.
| Character | Name | Use it for degrees? |
|---|---|---|
| ° | Degree sign (U+00B0) | Yes |
| º | Masculine ordinal indicator (U+00BA) | No. Used in Spanish and Portuguese, as in 1º (primero). It often has a line under it. |
| ˚ | Ring above (U+02DA) | No. It is an accent mark. |
Some old documents use º because Alt+167 was easy to type. Screen readers then say "masculine ordinal" instead of "degree", and search will not find it. Avoid it in reports, labels and lab files.
Examples: 360 Degree Symbol, Angles and Coordinates
- A full turn is 360°, a straight angle is 180°, a right angle is 90°. See the angle symbol page for ∠, ⊥ and ∥.
- Angles can be split into minutes and seconds: 23° 26′ 21″. The ′ and ″ marks are explained on our feet and inch symbol page.
- Mumbai is at about 19° N, 72° E.
- A weather report might say: Delhi 44 °C, Shimla 18 °C.
- Medical and lab readings, like 38.5 °C fever or 4 °C storage.

Frequently asked questions
What is the shortcut key for degree symbol?
On Windows hold Alt and type 0176 on the number pad (Alt+248 also works). On a Mac press Option+Shift+8. In Word you can also type 00B0 and press Alt+X.
How to type degree symbol in laptop without a number pad?
Press the Windows key and full stop together to open the emoji and symbol panel, then pick ° from the symbols tab. You can also open Character Map, or simply copy it from this page.
How to write degree symbol in Excel?
Use Alt+0176 in a cell, or the formula =CHAR(176). If the cells hold numbers, a custom number format like 0"°C" shows the symbol and keeps the value usable in formulas.
How to write degree symbol in Word on a laptop?
Type 00B0 and press Alt+X; this needs no number pad, so it is the best choice on laptops. You can also use Insert > Symbol > More Symbols and pick ° from the Latin-1 Supplement subset.
Is 25°C or 25 °C correct?
The SI style is 25 °C with a space, and many science books follow it. 25°C without a space is also widely used in everyday writing. Angles are always written without a space, like 25°.
Why is there no degree symbol for kelvin?
Kelvin is an absolute scale and its unit is simply called the kelvin, so you write 300 K. The degree sign was dropped from kelvin in 1967 by international agreement.
What is the degree symbol in LaTeX?
Write ^\circ inside maths mode, for example $45^\circ$. In normal text \textdegree works, and the gensymb package adds \degree.
