New emojis arrive every year, and this page lists recent ones like the shaking face ๐ซจ, the phoenix ๐ฆโ๐ฅ and the face with bags under eyes ๐ซฉ, with what they mean and how to get them on your phone. Tap any emoji in the grid to copy it. If you see an empty box instead of a picture, your phone does not support it yet, and the steps below explain how to fix that.
Each emoji below is marked with the Emoji version that added it. A higher version number means a newer emoji. This list grows as new releases reach phones, so treat it as a list of recent additions rather than every emoji ever made. For the meaning of older emojis, see emoji meanings, and for everything else, the emoji hub.
How a New Emoji Reaches Your Phone
- Proposal: people send proposals to the Unicode Consortium, the group that manages text standards.
- Approval: Unicode approves a set of new emojis in a yearly release, each with a name and code.
- Design: Apple, Google, Samsung, Microsoft and apps like WhatsApp draw their own version of each emoji.
- Update: the designs reach you through a phone software update (iOS, Android, Samsung One UI) or an app update.
That last step is why there is a gap. A new emoji can exist in Unicode months before your phone gets the picture. Until then, it may look like a box โฏ, a question mark, or two separate emojis.

Why Some New Emojis Show as Two Emojis
The Emoji 15.1 additions are built by joining existing emojis with an invisible character called a zero-width joiner. For example, the phoenix ๐ฆโ๐ฅ is a bird ๐ฆ plus a joiner plus fire ๐ฅ. The lime ๐โ๐ฉ is a lemon ๐ plus a green square ๐ฉ.
On a phone that knows the new emoji, you see one picture. On an older phone, you see the parts side by side, like ๐ฆ๐ฅ. This is a clever design: even without the update, the reader can usually guess the meaning. It also means these emojis have no single code for Word's Alt+X method; copy them from this page instead.
Why New Emojis Are Not Showing Up, and How to Get Them
If new emojis are not showing, the cause is almost always old software. Try these steps:
- Update your phone: Android: Settings, then System or Software update. iPhone: Settings, General, Software Update. Most new emojis Android and iPhone users get arrive this way.
- Update your keyboard: update Gboard, Samsung Keyboard or SwiftKey from the app store, so the emoji panel lists new emojis. You do not need a separate new emoji keyboard.
- Update the app: update WhatsApp, Instagram and other chat apps.
- Restart the phone after updating.
- Check the other person: if you can see an emoji but your friend cannot, their phone needs the update, not yours.
There is no safe way to "download new emojis" as a separate file for the whole phone. Apps that claim to add new emojis usually just install a keyboard with sticker images. Remember that a keyboard app can read what you type, so stick to trusted ones. Our emoji keyboard shortcuts guide covers the main keyboards.
New Emojis in WhatsApp and Instagram
On Android, WhatsApp uses its own emoji designs. That means new emojis in WhatsApp can appear after a WhatsApp update, sometimes even if the phone itself is older. On iPhone, WhatsApp uses Apple's emojis, so you need an iOS update. The meaning of new emojis in WhatsApp, or the WhatsApp new emoji meaning people ask about, is the same as the Unicode meaning; WhatsApp only changes the drawing.
Instagram new emojis follow your phone's system emojis in most places. If you see a box in a comment, update your phone.
Some people search for a "GB WhatsApp emoji update". Modified WhatsApp apps are unofficial, and WhatsApp has warned that accounts using them can be banned. The official app gets new emojis through normal updates. More tips are on our WhatsApp emoji page.
Trending Emoji vs New Emoji
A trending emoji is not always new. Older emojis often go viral with a new meaning: ๐ for "I'm dying of laughter", ๐ซ for awkward melting, or ๐ฟ for a deadpan reaction. New emojis take time to trend because many phones cannot show them at first.
If you want to mix existing emojis into something that feels new, try Emoji Kitchen or ready-made emoji combos. For text hearts that work on every phone, even without updates, use our heart symbols.
Frequently asked questions
What are the latest emojis?
Recent additions in our list include the face with bags under eyes ๐ซฉ, fingerprint ๐ซ and harp ๐ช from Emoji 16.0, and the phoenix ๐ฆโ๐ฅ, lime ๐โ๐ฉ and nodding head ๐โโ๏ธ from Emoji 15.1. Unicode adds new emojis every year, so newer ones may exist by the time you read this.
Why do I see a box instead of a new emoji?
Your phone or app does not have a picture for that emoji yet. Update your phone software, keyboard and chat app, then restart. If you still see a box, your phone may not get that update.
How do I get new emojis on Android?
Install system updates from Settings, update your keyboard app from the Play Store, and update apps like WhatsApp. New emojis mostly arrive with these updates rather than as separate downloads.
Can I copy and paste new emojis?
Yes. Tap any emoji in the grid on this page to copy it. It will paste correctly, but it only shows as a picture on phones that support it.
Who decides new emojis?
The Unicode Consortium approves new emojis after reviewing proposals. Phone makers and apps then design their own version and release it in updates.
