The classic smiley symbol is ☺, a simple outline face that you can even type with a keyboard shortcut. Next to it you will find its filled twin ☻, the Japanese letter ツ that looks like a little smiling face, and cute text faces like ^_^ and (◕‿◕).

Tap any face in the grid to copy it. These text smileys are handy in places where emojis do not show, and they give your message a softer, more playful feel.

Smiley Names and Meaning: All Smiley Meaning Chart

Here is each smiley and its meaning, with the official name where there is one. Use this smiley and meaning chart when you are not sure which face fits your message. Smileys and their meaning can change with the chat, so treat these as common uses, not fixed rules.

The smiley meaning in English and in Indian chats is mostly the same. The one to watch is 🙂: with friends it is fine, but alone after a long message it can feel like a polite "whatever". For a warmer smiley, choose 😊. You can see the full family of emoji smiles on our smile emoji page.

How to type the smiley face symbol with Alt code

On a Windows computer with a number pad, you can type the smiley face symbol directly:

  1. Turn on Num Lock.
  2. Hold Alt and press 1 on the numeric keypad, then let go. You get ☺.
  3. For the filled face, hold Alt and press 2. You get ☻.

These short codes come from the old DOS character table, so they work in Notepad and many Windows apps, but a few programs may ignore them. The number keys on the top row will not work; it must be the numeric keypad. Laptops without a keypad can use the methods below. You can find more codes on our Alt codes page.

Other ways to type a smile symbol

  • Microsoft Word: type 263A and press Alt+X for ☺, or 263B then Alt+X for ☻. Note that Word's AutoCorrect may turn 🙂 into a face automatically.
  • Mac: there is no Option key shortcut. Use Control+Command+Space and search "smiling".
  • Windows emoji panel: Windows+. then search "smile".
  • Android and iPhone: emojis like 😊 are on the emoji keyboard. Text faces like ツ and (◕‿◕) are easiest to copy from this page.
  • HTML: ☺ shows ☺.

Tip: on some phones ☺ may show as a coloured emoji. That depends on the phone's font, not on what you copied.

Smiley Keyboard Shortcut and Smile Text

There are three kinds of smiley shortcuts, and each works in a different place.

1. Smiley shortcut keys on a computer

  • Alt+1 gives ☺ and Alt+2 gives ☻ on Windows (numeric keypad, Num Lock on).
  • Windows+. or Windows+; opens the emoji panel with every emoji smiley.
  • On a Mac, Control+Command+Space opens the Character Viewer.

2. Smile text you type yourself

TypeMeaning
🙂Smile
😀Big laugh
😉Wink, joking
😛Tongue out, teasing
🙁Sad
^_^Happy
<3Heart

Some apps turn this smiley symbol text into an emoji as you type, for example 🙂 into 🙂, on supported devices. If you want it to stay as text, undo once right after it changes. Many more faces are on our text emoticons page.

3. Phone keyboards

On Android and iPhone, tap the smiley or globe key to open emojis. For a smiley copy paste of text faces like ツ or (◠‿◠), use the grid on this page.

Smiley GIF: a GIF is a moving picture, not a character, so it cannot be pasted as text. Use the GIF search in your keyboard where available, or the Download PNG button here for a still image. All emoji types are listed on the emoji hub.

Text emoticons and kaomoji

Before emoji, people drew faces with keyboard characters. Western emoticons are read sideways, while Japanese kaomoji are read straight:

TypeExamplesHow to read
Sideways emoticons🙂 🙂 😉 😀Tilt your head left
Kaomoji^_^ (◕‿◕) (◠‿◠) ᵔᴥᵔRead upright, the eyes are on top
Katakana faceツ ッThe letter tsu looks like two eyes and a smile

ツ is really a letter of the Japanese katakana script, read as "tsu". People outside Japan started using it as a face because of its shape, as in ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ for "no idea". ッ is the smaller form of the same letter.

A short history of the smiley face

The famous yellow smiley face was drawn by American designer Harvey Ball in 1963 for an office cheer-up campaign. It became one of the most copied images in the world.

The typed emoticon came later. In 1982 computer scientist Scott Fahlman suggested writing 🙂 on an online message board to mark jokes, so readers would not take them seriously. The idea spread quickly. Coloured emoji like 😊 and 🙂 arrived much later on mobile phones.

Where to use smileys (and where not to)

  • Bios and usernames: "ツ Kabir ツ" or "(◠‿◠) just vibing" look fun and simple. Gamers can find more on Free Fire symbols.
  • Friendly chats and class groups: a quick 🙂 or ^_^ keeps the tone warm.
  • Office messages: 🙂 is usually safe with colleagues you know. Note that 🙂 can sometimes read as cold or sarcastic, so 😊 is warmer.
  • Resumes and formal letters: skip smileys completely.

Add a little extra with hand symbols like ✌, heart symbols or anything from the cool symbols hub.
