What Is a Symbol?
So, what is symbol text, and how is it different from a picture? A symbol is a small mark that stands for an idea, a word or a value. The ₹ sign stands for "rupees". The > sign means "is greater than". A ✓ means "yes" or "done". Symbols save space and are understood across languages, which is why you see them on keyboards, price tags, road signs and food packets.
On a computer or phone, each text symbol is a character with its own Unicode number. That is why you can copy a symbol from one app and paste it into another, and it stays the same. A picture of a symbol is different: it cannot be pasted into a line of text. If you need an image, each page has a Download PNG button that saves the symbol as a transparent picture.
Not sure what a sign is called? Our symbol names list gives the English name of every keyboard key, and the symbol and meaning guide explains what signs like ☮, ⚖ and 🪷 stand for.

How to Type Symbols on Your Keyboard
Copying is fast, but typing a symbol yourself is handy when you use it often. Here are the main ways on each device.
| Device | Method |
|---|---|
| Windows | Hold Alt and type a number on the numeric keypad with Num Lock on, e.g. Alt+0176 for °. Or press Windows+. to open the emoji and symbol panel. |
| Microsoft Word | Type the Unicode code, then press Alt+X. For example, 20B9 then Alt+X gives ₹. Or use Insert > Symbol. |
| Mac | Use the Option key, e.g. Option+G for ©. Or press Control+Command+Space for the Character Viewer. |
| Android | On most Android keyboards, tap ?123, then =\< for more symbols. Long-press keys to see variants. |
| iPhone | Tap 123, then #+=. Long-press keys like $ or - to see more. |
For full lists, read our Alt code symbols table, the rupee symbol in keyboard guide and the tick symbol in Word and Excel guide. Each single symbol page also lists its HTML code, so web developers can use symbols safely in a web page.
Why Some Symbols Show as Boxes
Sometimes a symbol you paste shows up as an empty box, a question mark or a box with tiny numbers. The symbol is not broken. The device simply has no font that can draw it.
- Old phone or computer: new symbols and emoji are added to Unicode every year. An older system may not know them yet. Updating the software usually fixes it.
- Font problem: in Word or Excel, the chosen font may not include the symbol. Try a font with wide coverage, such as Segoe UI Symbol on Windows.
- The other person's device: it may look fine on your phone but show a box on your friend's older phone.
- Apps that limit characters: some forms, games and websites accept only basic letters and numbers.
If you need the symbol to look exactly the same everywhere, use the Download PNG button and add it as an image instead of text.
Where People Use Text Symbols
- Students: maths signs like ≥ and √ in notes, and Greek letters such as π in assignments.
- Office work: ₹ in invoices, ✓ and ✗ in Excel trackers, © and ™ in reports.
- Social media: hearts, stars and arrows to style an Instagram bio or a status.
- Gamers: crowns and other cool symbols in a nickname, where the game allows them.
- Greetings: ॐ, 🪔 and other signs in festival messages.
Whatever the need, the steps are the same: find the page, tap to copy, and paste.
