Meaning of the Hindu Om Symbol (Aum)
In Hindu belief, Om is the first sound, the sound from which the universe is said to have come. Mantras such as "Om Namah Shivaya" and the Gayatri Mantra begin with it, and many prayers end with "Om Shanti Shanti Shanti", a wish for peace.
The aum symbol is often explained through its three sounds. The Mandukya Upanishad links them with states of mind:
| Sound | Linked state |
|---|---|
| A | Waking state (jagrat) |
| U | Dreaming state (svapna) |
| M | Deep sleep (sushupti) |
| Silence after the sound | The fourth state (turiya), pure awareness beyond the other three |
So the hindu om symbol is not just a letter. For devotees it stands for the whole of reality and for Brahman, the ultimate truth.
Parts of the Written Om Symbol
Look closely at ॐ and you will see three parts:
- The large curves on the left, shaped a bit like the number 3, with a tail. Many teachers connect the curves to the three sounds A, U and M.
- The crescent (half moon) above the curves.
- The dot (bindu) above the crescent. Together the crescent and dot are called the chandrabindu, and the dot is often said to stand for the silent fourth state.
These explanations come from tradition and teachers, and different schools describe them in slightly different ways. All agree that the symbol of om is treated with great respect.
Om in Tamil, Telugu, Bengali and Jain Scripts
Om is written differently in different Indian scripts. Each form in the grid is a real character or letter combination:
| Form | Script | Note |
|---|---|---|
| ॐ | Devanagari | Used for Hindi, Sanskrit and Marathi |
| ௐ | Tamil | The om symbol Tamil devotees use, often seen with Lord Murugan's vel |
| ఓం | Telugu | Letter O plus anusvara |
| ওঁ | Bengali | Letter O plus chandrabindu |
| ꣽ | Jain Om | A special Devanagari form used in Jain texts |
| 🕉 | Emoji | Shows in colour on most phones |
Note: ੴ is not Om. It is Ik Onkar, the Sikh symbol meaning "One Creator". Read about it on the Sikh symbols page.

Om and Swastik Symbol Together
On many Indian homes the om and swastik symbol appear side by side, drawn in kumkum or fixed as brass plates above the main door. A swastik om symbol pair at the entrance is a traditional way of welcoming good fortune, and some families add a trishul to make "om, swastik, trishul". You can copy the set here: ॐ 卐 🔱.
Learn more about each one on the swastik symbol and trishul symbol pages, or see all faiths on the religious symbols hub.

Om is also used in Buddhist mantras such as "Om Mani Padme Hum". Because it is sacred, many people avoid placing it on the floor or on shoes. If you are designing something, keep ॐ upright and give it clear space.
