Animal Emoji Meanings

Animal meanings are not official. They come from how people describe each other and from popular stories. Here is how each emoji in the grid is commonly used.

Most of these are among the original emojis. 🦁 came in Emoji 1.0, 🦋 in Emoji 3.0, and 🦚 in Emoji 11.0. For the text butterfly character and other non-emoji versions, see butterfly symbol.

Cat Emoji and Dog Emoji: Faces, Paws and Text

There are two kinds of pet emoji. Face emojis (🐱 🐶) show only the head and feel cute and friendly. Full-body emojis (🐈 cat, 🐕 dog) look more like a real animal. There is also a black cat emoji 🐈‍⬛, made by joining 🐈 with a black square, so an older phone may show the two parts side by side.

• Cat smile emoji: 😺 😸 😻 are cat faces with feelings, from grinning to heart eyes.
• Paw prints: 🐾 works for both cat paw and dog paw, and for "pet lover" bios.
• Dog barking: no barking emoji exists; people write "woof woof 🐶".

Cat emoji text without colour: =^.^= or (=^･ω･^=). These text faces work in places that block emoji. More are on text emoticons.

Peacock, Lion, Tiger, Snake, Horse and Bird Emoji

Peacock emoji 🦚

The peacock emoji shows the full bird with its tail. There is no separate peacock feather emoji, so people copy 🦚 for the feather idea, often in Krishna-related wishes (see Indian emoji). 🪶 is a plain feather, not a peacock feather.

Lion emoji and tiger emoji

🦁 shows strength and leadership, and fans of a team often use it. 🐯 is the tiger face, and 🐅 is the full tiger. Many wildlife and Save the Tiger posts in India use 🐅.

Snake emoji 🐍

The snake emoji is used for nature and Nag Panchami posts, but in chats it often means a fake or two-faced person. Be careful: calling someone 🐍 can hurt.

Horse emoji

🐴 is the horse face and 🐎 is a running horse, used for speed or horse riding. 🦄 (unicorn) means magic, something rare, or a dreamy style.

Bird emoji

🐦 is a general bird, 🕊️ is the white dove for peace, 🐤 and 🐥 are baby chicks, 🦜 is a parrot and 🦅 an eagle. For a flying bird, 🕊️ is the closest.

Is There a Seahorse Emoji?

No. There is no seahorse emoji in Unicode, and there never has been. Yet many people feel sure they have seen one. This is often given as an example of a "Mandela effect", where lots of people share the same false memory. The seahorse emoji Mandela effect probably happens because seahorse stickers and clip art exist in many apps, and because the sea animal set already feels like it should have one.

Closest options you can copy: 🐠 tropical fish, 🐟 fish, 🐬 dolphin, 🐙 octopus, 🐡 blowfish, 🦈 shark, 🐚 shell. For "sea life" in one line: 🐬🐠🐙🐚.

Pikachu Emoji: Why There Isn't One

Pikachu is a character from a video game and cartoon series. Characters owned by companies are not part of the Unicode emoji set, so there is no official Pikachu emoji to copy, and any "Pikachu emoji" you see is a sticker or image made by an app. A Pikachu emoji text version also does not exist as a standard character. Fans usually make a simple combo instead, such as ⚡🐭 (lightning plus mouse) or 🐭💛⚡.
