The up arrow symbol ↑ points to the top of the page, so it mostly means rise, increase or "go up". It shows up in price reports, in chemistry equations, on keyboards and in posts that say "read the caption above".
The grid has the thin ↑ plus a double, a bold, a triangle and an outline version. Tap to copy any one. Below you will find what each upward arrow symbol is used for and how to type it.
Meaning of the Upward Arrow Symbol
| Where | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Prices and sales | Petrol ↑ ₹2 | Price went up |
| Stock reports | Shares ▲ 3.5% | Gain for the day |
| Chemistry | Zn + 2HCl → ZnCl₂ + H₂↑ | A gas is given off |
| Health reports | Value ↑ | Above the normal range (ask your doctor what it means for you) |

In school chemistry, the small ↑ written right after a product is a short way to say that the product escapes as a gas. Its partner, ↓, marks a solid that settles down; see the down arrow symbol page.
Up Arrow Styles: ↑ vs ⇑ vs ▲ vs ⇧
- ↑ Upwards Arrow: the everyday thin arrow for notes and reports.
- ⇑ Upwards Double Arrow: a stronger look; also used in some maths and logic texts.
- ⬆ Upwards Black Arrow: a bold arrow. On phones it may show as the emoji ⬆️.
- ▲ Black Up-Pointing Triangle: very common in finance tables for a gain, often in green.
- △ White Up-Pointing Triangle: an outline triangle. It looks like the Greek capital delta, but it is not the same letter; for maths, use the delta symbol.
- ⇧ Upwards White Arrow: the shape printed on the Shift key, and used in menus to mean Shift.
- ⤴ and ↟: curved and two-headed styles for posts and designs.

Using the Arrow Up Symbol Well
- Put ↑ right after the item it describes: "Sales ↑ 12%".
- In a table, use ▲ for rise and ▼ for fall, and keep them in one column.
- Do not rely on colour alone. Some readers cannot tell red from green, so the arrow direction should carry the meaning.
- For a chemistry gas, write the arrow after the formula, not before it.
Other directions are on the right arrow and left arrow pages. The main arrow symbols page has every style together.
