National Flag and State Emblem
National Flag: the Tiranga 🇮🇳
The flag has three equal stripes: saffron at the top, white in the middle and green at the bottom. In the centre of the white stripe is the navy blue Ashoka Chakra, a wheel with 24 spokes. The width and length are in the ratio 2:3. The Constituent Assembly adopted the flag on 22 July 1947. Saffron is commonly explained as courage and sacrifice, white as truth and peace, and green as faith and growth.
State Emblem
The State Emblem is adapted from the Lion Capital of Ashoka at Sarnath. It shows four lions standing back to back, of which three can be seen in the usual picture. Below them is a wheel (the Dharma Chakra) with a bull on one side and a horse on the other. Under it is the motto Satyameva Jayate ("Truth alone triumphs") in Devanagari script. It was adopted on 26 January 1950, the day the Constitution came into force. You see it on currency notes, passports and government papers. Its use is controlled by law, so it should not be used in logos or personal designs.
National Anthem and National Song
National Anthem: Jana Gana Mana. It was written by Rabindranath Tagore, originally in Bengali. The full version takes about 52 seconds to sing. People stand in attention when it is played, as a mark of respect.
National Song: Vande Mataram. It was written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee and appears in his novel Anandamath. It praises the motherland and was a popular cry during the freedom struggle.
National Animal, Bird, Flower, Tree and Fruit
- Bengal tiger 🐅: the national animal stands for strength and grace. India is home to many tiger reserves.
- Indian peafowl 🦚: the national bird. The male, with its blue neck and long fan of tail feathers, is the peacock you see dancing before the rains.
- Lotus 🪷: the national flower. It grows in muddy ponds but stays clean, so it stands for purity. It is also important in Indian art and religion. See more in our flower symbols list and the symbol meanings guide.
- Banyan tree: the national tree. Its branches drop roots that grow into new trunks, so one tree can spread very wide and live for a very long time.
- Mango 🥭: the national fruit, grown across India in hundreds of varieties.
River, Aquatic Animal, Heritage Animal and Calendar
- Ganga: the national river. It flows from the Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal and is sacred to many Indians.
- Ganges river dolphin: the national aquatic animal. It lives in fresh water and is nearly blind, finding its way by sound.
- Elephant 🐘: the national heritage animal, important in Indian culture, temples and forests.
- Saka calendar: the national calendar, used by the government alongside the Gregorian calendar.
Symbol of Indian Rupee (₹)
The symbol of Indian rupee, ₹, was adopted in 2010. It was designed by D. Udaya Kumar. The design mixes the Devanagari letter र (ra) and the Roman letter R, with two lines across the top. Before it, people wrote "Rs". Today ₹ appears on notes, coins, price tags and keyboards.

Is Hockey the National Game of India?
Many textbooks and quiz books say hockey is India's national game. In fact, the Government of India has not officially declared any sport as the national game. Hockey is loved and has a proud Olympic history in India, but the "national game" label is a common myth. If an exam asks this, follow your board's textbook, and know that the official position is that there is none.
Using National Symbol Pictures Respectfully
Students often need a national symbol picture for a chart or project, or a national symbol of India picture for a slide. Emoji like 🇮🇳, 🐅, 🦚 and 🪷 are fine for this. You can copy them as text or save them with the Download PNG button. Keep these simple points in mind:
- Show the flag with saffron on top.
- Do not change the State Emblem or use it as a logo.
- Write facts from your textbook or official sources when in doubt.
