The four card symbols ♠ ♥ ♦ ♣ are called suits: spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs. Every standard 52-card pack has 13 cards of each suit, and the same four shapes are now popular as stylish characters in usernames and bios.

Tap any suit in the grid to copy it. On Windows you can also type all four filled suits with short Alt codes, shown below.

Names of the four suits in English and Hindi

In India, people often use Hindi names for the suits. Names vary a little from region to region, but these are the most common:

SymbolEnglishCommon Hindi nameColour
♠SpadesHukum, kaala paanBlack
♥HeartsPaan, laal paanRed
♦DiamondsEentRed
♣ClubsChidiBlack

A handy memory trick: "kaala paan" (black leaf) is the spade symbol, "laal paan" (red leaf) is the heart, and "eent" means brick, which matches the diamond shape.

How to type card symbols with Alt codes

The four filled suits have short Alt codes from the old DOS character table. Turn on Num Lock, hold Alt and type the number on the numeric keypad:

SuitAlt codeWord codeHTML
♥ HeartAlt+32665, Alt+X♥
♦ DiamondAlt+42666, Alt+X♦
♣ ClubAlt+52663, Alt+X♣
♠ SpadeAlt+62660, Alt+X♠

These short codes work in many Windows apps but not in every program. The outline suits ♤ ♡ ♢ ♧ have no Alt code; in Word type 2664, 2661, 2662 or 2667 and press Alt+X. On a Mac there is no Option key shortcut, so use Control+Command+Space and search "suit". On phones, search "spade" or "club" in the emoji keyboard, or copy from this page. See all short codes on Alt codes.

Diamond symbol: suit or gemstone?

"What is the symbol of diamond?" can mean two things. The card suit is ♦ (filled) or ♢ (outline). The gemstone is usually shown with the 💎 gem emoji, which you can find by searching "gem" on your emoji keyboard. In maths and design, a plain diamond shape ◇ is also used, but it is not a card symbol.

Similarly, ♥ the card heart is a little different from the love hearts on our heart symbols page, though both work for love messages.

Which symbol is highest in cards?

It depends on the game. In many card games all four suits are equal and only the card number matters. In contract bridge, the suits are ranked for bidding, from highest to lowest:

  1. ♠ Spades
  2. ♥ Hearts
  3. ♦ Diamonds
  4. ♣ Clubs

A simple way to remember bridge order is alphabetical, from the bottom: clubs, diamonds, hearts, spades. Always check the rules of the game you are playing, because house rules differ.

Ace symbol and the joker

The ace card symbol is the letter A with one suit mark, and there is also a full card character 🂡 for the ace of spades. The ace is the highest card in many games and the lowest (counted as 1) in others. In everyday English "ace" also means expert, as in "she aced the exam".

The joker 🃏 is the wild extra card in a pack. As an emoji it often means someone playful or a prankster: "class joker 🃏".

Using suit symbols in names and bios

Suit shapes are short and bold, so they work well as name decorations:

  • ♠ Arjun ♠
  • ♡ Sana ♡
  • ♣ team clubhouse ♣
  • ♢ ♤ ♡ ♧ minimal vibes
  • 🂡 ace of my class

The outline suits look lighter and more aesthetic, while the filled ones look stronger for gaming names. Pair them with a crown symbol or ideas from Free Fire symbols, and find more on the cool symbols hub.

Frequently asked questions

What is the club card symbol?

The club symbol is ♣, a three-leaf shape with a stem. Its outline version is ♧. In Hindi it is commonly called chidi, and you can type ♣ on Windows with Alt+5.

How do I type the spade symbol?

Hold Alt and press 6 on the numeric keypad for ♠. In Word, type 2660 and press Alt+X. On a phone, copy it from this page or search "spade" in emoji.

Why are hearts and diamonds red?

In a standard pack, hearts and diamonds are printed in red, and spades and clubs in black. The text symbols here take your text colour, so they may show black unless you change the font colour.

What is the ace symbol?

The ace is marked with the letter A and a single suit. 🂡 is the Unicode character for the ace of spades card.

Are the card suit symbols the same as emoji?

Some phones draw ♠ ♥ ♦ ♣ as coloured emoji, others as plain text. They are the same characters; only the style changes by device.
