The dollar symbol is $, an S with one vertical line through it, and you can copy it from the box above or type it with Shift+4. It is one of the few currency signs printed on almost every keyboard in the world.

On this page you will learn which countries use the dollar sign symbol, how to tell US$, C$ and A$ apart, where the $ shape came from, and how to type it on a computer or phone. For the Indian side of a price, see the rupee symbol ₹ page.

What Does the Dollar Symbol Mean?

The $ sign means "dollar" and is placed before the amount: $20 is twenty dollars. The smaller unit is the cent, and 100 cents make one dollar, so $0.50 is fifty cents (also written 50¢, see the cent symbol page).

When people say "dollar" without a country, they usually mean the US dollar, whose ISO code is USD. That is why many search for the "USD symbol": it is the same $ sign. People also look up "dollar symbol currency" or "USD symbol currency" to check whether $ and USD mean the same money. They do: $ is the sign and USD is the code. The same $ works for one dollar or a thousand, so there is no separate dollars symbol. In Hindi conversation, "dollar ka symbol" also simply means $.

Outside money, $ appears in maths puzzles, computer code and spreadsheet formulas. In Excel, for example, $A$1 is a fixed cell reference and has nothing to do with currency.

Which Countries Use the Dollar Sign?

Many countries call their money a dollar and use the same $ sign. To make it clear which one you mean, add letters in front.

CurrencyPrefix formISO code
US dollarUS$USD
Canadian dollarC$ or CA$CAD
Australian dollarA$ or AU$AUD
Singapore dollarS$SGD
Hong Kong dollarHK$HKD
New Zealand dollarNZ$NZD

In short, the US dollar symbol is US$, the Australian dollar symbol is A$ and the Singapore dollar symbol is S$, while the code is always three letters. Inside each country, plain $ is normal. A Canadian shop just writes $5 and everyone knows it means Canadian dollars. The prefix matters when two dollars could be confused, such as on a travel booking or an international invoice. Some peso currencies in Latin America also use $, while Brazil writes its real as R$. The full list is on the currency symbols page.

The UK does not use a dollar. Its money is the pound, written £; see the pound symbol page.

One Line or Two? Dollar Sign Variants

Some fonts draw $ with two vertical lines instead of one. Both shapes are the same dollar sign; it is only a design choice. In Portuguese, the two-line form is called the cifrão. The grid above also includes:

  • $ fullwidth dollar: a wider version that lines up with Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters. Use it only in that kind of text.
  • 💲 heavy dollar sign and 💵 banknote: emojis for chats and social posts, not for bills.
  • US$, C$, A$: ready-made dollar symbol text you can copy for invoices.

Where Did the Dollar Symbol Come From?

The most widely accepted explanation links $ to the Spanish peso, a silver coin that was traded across the Americas for a long time. Merchants shortened "pesos" to "ps". Over time the s was written over the p, and the p shrank to a vertical stroke, leaving $.

The word "dollar" has a different root. It comes from the thaler, a large silver coin from central Europe. English speakers used "dollar" for such coins, including the Spanish peso, and the name stayed when the United States chose its own money.

Writing Dollar Amounts Correctly

  • Put the sign first, with no space: $250, not 250$.
  • With a code, put a space: USD 250 or 250 USD. Both are seen; banks prefer the code before.
  • Do not use both: "$250 USD" repeats the currency. Choose $250 or USD 250 (US$250 is fine too).
  • Large numbers use international commas: $1,250,000.
  • In Indian reports, write "$1 million" rather than mixing dollars with lakh and crore.

This is general writing guidance. It does not show or predict any exchange rate.
