The fastest emoji shortcut on a Windows laptop is Windows+. (full stop), and on a Mac it is Control+Command+Space. Those two keys open a full emoji picker in almost any app, from Word to WhatsApp Web. This page covers those and every other common method: Chromebook, Android (Gboard, Samsung, SwiftKey), iPhone, Word, Google Docs, Outlook and colon codes in Slack and Discord.
Emojis have no Alt codes, so the old Alt+number trick from our Alt codes list does not work for them. If you only need one emoji now, tap ๐ โค๏ธ or ๐ in the grid above to copy it. Steps can vary a little by software version, so if a menu name looks different on your device, look for the closest match. For other emoji topics, start at the emoji hub.

Windows Emoji Shortcut: How to Use Emoji in Laptop or PC
- Click where you want the emoji, for example in a Word file, a browser chat or Notepad.
- Press Windows+. (or Windows+;). A small emoji panel opens.
- Start typing a word like "heart" or "cake" to search, or scroll the categories.
- Click the emoji, or use the arrow keys and Enter. Press Esc to close.
The same panel has tabs for kaomoji like (โโฟโ) and for symbols such as โน and ยฐ, on recent versions of Windows. This Windows emoji shortcut works in Outlook too, so that is the simple answer to "how to add emoji in Outlook". Colour display depends on the app; some older desktop programs show emojis in black and white.
Emoji Shortcut on Mac
- Place the cursor in any text box.
- Press Control+Command+Space. The Character Viewer pops up.
- Type to search, or click a category, then click an emoji.
On newer Macs with a globe key (marked ๐ or Fn), a single press can open the same panel. If it does something else, check System Settings, then Keyboard, and set the globe key to show Emoji and Symbols. Click the expand icon in the corner of the small panel to get the full Character Viewer with every symbol.
Android Emoji Keyboard: Gboard, Samsung and SwiftKey
Gboard (Google keyboard)
Look for a smiley key next to the space bar. If you do not see one, long-press the comma or Enter key; on many layouts this opens emojis. To show a separate emoji key, open Gboard settings, then Preferences, and turn on the option to show an emoji switch key, where available. Type a word in the emoji search box at the top of the emoji panel to find one fast.
How to get emojis on Samsung keyboard
- Tap any text box so the Samsung keyboard opens.
- Tap the smiley icon in the toolbar above the letters, or the emoji key near the space bar.
- If the toolbar is hidden, tap the arrow or three-dot icon at the top of the keyboard to show it.
- Use the search option inside the emoji panel to find emojis by name.
The Samsung emoji keyboard also offers stickers and, on supported Galaxy phones, AR Emoji avatars. Samsung emoji designs look different from Google's, but the characters are the same.
SwiftKey keyboard emoji
SwiftKey usually has an emoji key at the bottom, and on some layouts you long-press Enter. It also suggests emojis while you type words.
A common question is "snapchat emojis android": Snapchat and most apps use your phone's own emoji set, so emojis look like Google or Samsung designs on Android and like Apple designs on iPhone.
iPhone, Google Docs and Chat Apps
iPhone: tap the smiley key, or the globe key if you have more than one keyboard. If neither appears, go to Settings, General, Keyboard, Keyboards, then Add New Keyboard and choose Emoji. Our iPhone emoji page has more tips.
Google Docs: use Insert, then Special characters, and search by name, or in many versions type a colon followed by the emoji name to get suggestions. On Windows and Mac the system shortcuts above also work inside Docs.
Word: type the code, then press Alt+X. For example, 1F600 then Alt+X gives ๐, 2764 then Alt+X gives โค, and 1F44D then Alt+X gives ๐. This works for most single emojis.
Slack, Discord and WhatsApp Web: type a colon and start a word, like :thumbs or , and a suggestion list appears where supported. For WhatsApp emoji tips, see WhatsApp emoji meaning.
Best Emoji Keyboard for Android: What to Look For
Your phone's built-in keyboard is usually enough. Before you search for an emoji keyboard download, compare these features:
- Emoji search by word, in English and ideally in Hindi or your language.
- Emoji suggestions while typing.
- Recently used emojis and skin tone memory.
- Regular updates, so new emojis appear sooner.
- Kaomoji and sticker sections if you like them.
Privacy warning: a keyboard app can see everything you type, including passwords and OTPs. Install only well-known keyboards from the official app store, read the permissions, and avoid unknown "emoji keyboard app for Android" downloads that ask for full network or contact access. A third-party keyboard cannot add emojis your phone's system does not support; for that, see new emojis.
