The veg symbol on Indian food packs is a green square outline with a filled green circle (the "green dot") inside it. The non veg symbol is a brown square outline with a filled brown triangle inside. These marks come from FSSAI labelling rules and help you see at a glance whether a packet is vegetarian.
There is no exact Unicode character for either mark, so the grid above shows close look-alikes made from emoji: ๐ฉ๐ข for veg and ๐ซ๐บ for non-veg. They are only stand-ins for chats and notes, not the official marks.
Veg and Non Veg Symbol: What Each Mark Means
| Mark | How it looks | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Veg (vegetarian symbol) | Green square outline, filled green circle inside | No meat, fish, poultry or egg. Milk and milk products are allowed. |
| Non-veg | Brown square outline, filled brown triangle inside | Contains meat, fish, poultry or egg, or ingredients from them |
| Older non-veg packs | Brown or red square outline, filled circle inside | The earlier non-veg mark, still seen on some old stock |
The veg and non veg symbol works without words, so anyone can read it, whatever language they speak or read. That is why it is one of the most useful food symbols in India.
Why the Non Veg Symbol Changed from a Circle to a Triangle
Earlier, the non veg symbol on food products was a brown circle inside a brown square. Since the veg mark was a green circle inside a green square, the two marks differed mainly by colour. In its 2020 labelling regulations, FSSAI changed the non-veg mark to a brown triangle. A triangle and a circle have different shapes, so the two marks are now easier to tell apart, even at a quick glance.
Because packets stay in shops and homes for a long time, you may still see the old circle mark on some products. Both mean non-veg.
Veg Non Veg Egg Symbol: Is Egg Veg?
Under FSSAI rules, a food that contains egg is marked as non-veg. So a cake, mayonnaise or biscuit made with egg should carry the brown non-veg mark, not the green dot. There is no separate egg symbol on food products in India.
Many people search for an eggetarian mark, but the rule is simple: if egg is an ingredient, the pack is non-veg. Always read the ingredient list too, since the mark is a quick guide and the list gives the details.
Pure Veg Symbol and the Vegan Logo
Pure veg: you may see "pure veg" on restaurant boards and some packs. This is a phrase businesses use. On packaged food, the official mark is still the same green veg symbol.
Vegan logo: FSSAI also has a separate vegan logo. It shows a green letter "V" with a small leaf. A vegan food has no animal products at all, so it also leaves out milk, ghee, curd and honey. A food can carry the green veg dot and still not be vegan, for example paneer or milk chocolate.
For other signs you see on packets, like the recycling mark, see the recycle symbol page and our symbol meanings guide.
How to Check the Veg Symbol in Food Packs
- Look at the front of the pack, near the brand name or product name. The mark is usually printed there.
- Check the shape inside the square: a circle (green) means veg, a triangle (brown) means non-veg.
- Check the colour as a second step. Green is veg, brown is non-veg.
- If you are unsure, read the ingredient list on the back.
- For vegan needs, look for the green "V" vegan logo as well.
General information only: this page explains the marks as seen on packs. For strict dietary, religious or allergy needs, always read the full label or contact the maker.
