The inch symbol is ″ (double prime) and the feet symbol is ′ (prime), so a height of 5 feet 8 inches is written 5′ 8″. Most people type the straight keyboard marks ' and " instead, and that is fine for quick messages.
Tap ′ or ″ in the grid above to copy the proper characters for documents, product listings or resumes. Below you will learn how to type them, how to write square feet, and how to convert feet and inches into centimetres.
Feet and Inches Symbol: Which Mark Is Which
| Unit | Proper symbol | Quick keyboard version | Abbreviation | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| foot / feet | ′ (prime) | ' | ft | 6′ or 6 ft |
| inch / inches | ″ (double prime) | " | in | 10″ or 10 in |
| feet and inches | ′ and ″ | ' and " | ft in | 5′ 8″ or 5 ft 8 in |
The symbol of inch, also called the inch sign symbol or inch mark, is ″, and the inches symbol is the same for one inch or many. Together, ′ and ″ form the inch and feet symbol pair. An easy way to remember: one mark for the bigger unit (foot), two marks for the smaller unit (inch). In Hindi conversation people say "paanch foot aath inch", and if you are wondering about the inch ka symbol, it is the two small slanted lines ″ after the number.
The foot symbol, the ft symbol and the prime symbol all mean the same thing here: 1 ft = 1′ = 12 inches.
How to Write Height in Feet and Inches
In India height is still mostly given in feet and inches on biodata, forms and job applications, even though centimetres are the official unit in many places. Here are the clean ways to write it:
- With symbols: 5′ 8″ (a small space after the feet value is common).
- With keyboard marks: 5' 8" (perfectly acceptable in emails and chats).
- With words: 5 ft 8 in, or 5 feet 8 inches.
- Metric: 173 cm (rounded from 172.72 cm).
Avoid writing 5.8 feet when you mean 5′ 8″. 5.8 feet is 5 feet and about 9.6 inches, because a foot has 12 inches, not 10.
Feet and Inches to cm: Conversion Table
The exact relations are 1 inch = 2.54 cm and 1 foot = 12 inches = 30.48 cm. Use them to check any height or length:
| Feet and inches | Total inches | Centimetres |
|---|---|---|
| 5′ 0″ | 60 | 152.4 cm |
| 5′ 2″ | 62 | 157.48 cm |
| 5′ 4″ | 64 | 162.56 cm |
| 5′ 6″ | 66 | 167.64 cm |
| 5′ 8″ | 68 | 172.72 cm |
| 5′ 10″ | 70 | 177.8 cm |
| 6′ 0″ | 72 | 182.88 cm |
To go the other way, divide centimetres by 2.54. For example 170 cm ÷ 2.54 = 66.93 inches, which is 5′ 6.93″, roughly 5′ 7″. One metre is about 3.28 feet.
Square Feet Symbol: sq ft and ft²
There is no single square feet symbol. Area in feet is written in one of these ways:
- sq ft or sq. ft.: common in Indian property ads, for example "2 BHK, 950 sq ft".
- ft²: the scientific style, using superscript two. On Windows press Alt+0178 for ², or in Word type 00B2 then Alt+X.
Do not write 950′² or 950″ for area. Those marks are only for length. Handy facts: 1 sq ft = 144 sq in, and 1 sq ft is about 0.0929 m², so 1,000 sq ft is roughly 92.9 m². This is general information; property agreements may use their own definitions of carpet or built-up area.

Fix the curly quote problem in Word
Word changes straight quotes into curly ones (“ ”) as you type, so 5' 8" may turn into 5’ 8” which looks wrong. Fixes:
- Press Ctrl+Z right after Word changes the mark. It goes back to straight.
- Or turn it off: File > Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect Options > AutoFormat As You Type, and untick "Straight quotes with smart quotes".
- Best of all, use 2032 and 2033 with Alt+X for true primes.
Excel
Excel cannot calculate with 5'8". Keep feet and inches in two number columns, or store total inches and convert with =INT(A2/12)&"′ "&MOD(A2,12)&"″".
Prime Symbol in Maths and Angles
The feet symbol in math class is the same prime ′, but there it has other jobs:
- Angles: ′ means arcminutes and ″ means arcseconds. 1° = 60′ and 1′ = 60″, so a latitude may read 28° 36′ 50″ N. See the degree symbol page.
- Calculus: f′(x) is the first derivative and f″(x) the second; ‴ is used for the third.
- Geometry: A′ (A prime) names the image of point A after a reflection or rotation.
- Time: in sports, 4′ 30″ can mean 4 minutes 30 seconds.
For more measurement signs, see the diameter symbol, the plus-minus symbol for tolerances, the apostrophe page for the ' key, and the full math symbols list.
