The most widely used advocate symbol is ⚖, the scales of justice, which stands for fairness, balance and the law. Lawyers put it on name plates, visiting cards, letterheads and social profiles, for example "Adv. Neha Kulkarni ⚖". Tap ⚖ in the copy box to copy it, or use Download PNG for a transparent image.

This page also covers § (section sign) and ¶ (paragraph sign) used in legal writing, the meaning of Lady Justice, and the visible symbols of the legal profession in India.

Meaning of the Scales: Symbol of Justice

The two pans of the scales show that both sides of a case are weighed equally before a decision is made. That is why ⚖ is used as a law symbol, lawyer symbol and justice symbol in many countries, including India.

The scales are usually held by Lady Justice, a figure based on ancient Roman ideas of justice. In the classic form she has:

  • Scales in one hand: weighing evidence fairly
  • A sword in the other hand: the power to enforce a judgement
  • A blindfold: judging without favour, no matter who the person is

When people search "new symbol of justice in India" or "new advocate symbol", they usually mean a newer Lady Justice statue at the Supreme Court of India that is shown without a blindfold and holding a copy of the Constitution in place of the sword. It is a sculpture, not a new typed character, so ⚖ is still the symbol to copy.

Advocate and Law Symbol in India: Coat and Bands

In Indian courts, the most visible symbol of an advocate is the dress: a black coat or black jacket with white neck bands (two white strips at the collar). The black stands for seriousness and authority, and the white bands are a long-standing mark of the legal profession. Many advocates use a small drawing of the bands, or the scales ⚖, as a logo on their cards.

There is no single Unicode character for the neck bands, so for typed text ⚖ is the practical choice. If you need a building icon for "court" or "chambers", 🏛 works well as a court symbol in messages.

This page gives general information only. For any rule on what an advocate may print or advertise, check the guidance that applies to you.

For print, use the plain ⚖ or the text-style ⚖︎, which stay black and match your font. The advocate symbol emoji ⚖️ is better for WhatsApp or a social bio, where it shows in colour. For a logo, the Download PNG option gives you advocate symbol images with a transparent background.

Section Symbol § and Paragraph Symbol ¶

Two old typographic signs are common in legal documents.

  • § Section symbol: means "section", as in "§ 12" for section 12 of a statute or contract. Two signs §§ mean "sections". In Indian writing, "Sec." or "S." is more common, but § appears in many international documents.
  • ¶ Paragraph symbol (pilcrow): marks a paragraph, as in "¶ 4" for paragraph 4 of a judgement or affidavit.

Alt codes need the numeric keypad with Num Lock on. In Word, the ¶ button on the Home tab (or Ctrl+Shift+8) only shows or hides formatting marks; it does not type the paragraph symbol in Word. For that, use the codes above. More codes are on the Alt codes page.

How to Type the Scales Symbol ⚖

⚖ has no Alt code. Try these:

  • Word: type 2696, then press Alt+X.
  • Word or Excel: Insert > Symbol > More Symbols, font Segoe UI Symbol, character code 2696.
  • Windows: Windows+. and search "scales" or "balance".
  • Mac: Control+Command+Space, search "scales".
  • Phone: search "justice" or "scales" in the emoji keyboard for the law symbol emoji ⚖️.
  • HTML: ⚖

Frequently asked questions

What is the symbol of an advocate?

The scales of justice ⚖ is the most common symbol of an advocate and of law in general. In Indian courts, the black coat with white neck bands is the visible symbol of the profession.

What does the Lady Justice symbol mean?

Lady Justice holds scales for fair weighing of evidence and a sword for the power of the law, and she is often blindfolded to show that justice does not take sides.

How do I type the section symbol §?

Use Alt+0167 on a Windows numeric keypad, Option+6 on a Mac, or type 00A7 then Alt+X in Word. In HTML, write §.

Is there an official advocate logo I must use?

This page does not cover any official logo rule. ⚖ is simply a widely recognised symbol for law that many advocates use; check the rules that apply to you before printing anything for professional use.

Which is better for a card: ⚖ or ⚖️?

Use ⚖ (or the text-style ⚖︎) for printed cards and name plates because it stays one colour. Use ⚖️ in chats and social bios where a colourful emoji looks good.
