Heart Symbol Text vs Heart Emoji: What Is the Difference?
A heart text symbol is a normal Unicode character, just like a letter. It has no colour of its own. If your text is white on a black background, ♥ turns white. If you make a word red in Word, the heart becomes red too. That is why text hearts are the safe choice for game names, usernames, Excel sheets and places that block emoji.
A heart emoji is drawn by your phone or app as a small picture with fixed colours. The same 💖 looks a little different on Android, iPhone and Windows. Emoji also take more space and some games and forms refuse them.

A white heart symbol can mean two things: the outline text heart ♡ or the white emoji 🤍. A black heart symbol can be the text heart ♥ (its Unicode name is "Black Heart Suit") or the black emoji 🖤. Pick the one that matches where you will paste it.
How to Type a Heart Symbol on Keyboard (Alt Code, Word, Mac)
Windows Alt code
- Turn on Num Lock.
- Hold Alt and press 3 on the numeric keypad.
- Release Alt. You get ♥.
This code comes from the old DOS character table, so a few apps may show something else. Laptops without a number pad can use the emoji panel instead: press Windows+. and search "heart". There is no standard Alt code for ♡, ❤ or the emoji hearts.
Microsoft Word
Type the code and press Alt+X right after it: 2665 gives ♥, 2661 gives ♡, 2764 gives ❤ and 2765 gives ❥. You can also use Insert > Symbol > More Symbols and search by the code.
Excel and Google Docs
In Excel, use Insert > Symbol, or type =UNICHAR(9829) in a cell to get ♥. In Google Docs, open Insert > Special characters and type "heart" in the search box.
Mac
Press Control+Command+Space to open the Character Viewer, search "heart" and double-click the one you want. There is no Option key shortcut for hearts.

The oldest keyboard heart symbol is <3: a less-than sign followed by 3. Turn your head left and it looks like a heart. Many apps turn <3 into a heart emoji automatically.

How to Type Hearts on Android and iPhone
Android: on most Android keyboards, tap the emoji key and open the hearts in the smileys or symbols tab. Some keyboards also keep ♥ or ♡ on the extra symbol page (tap ?123, then =\<).
