The registered symbol ® is a capital R inside a circle, and it shows that a brand name or logo is a registered trademark. You will see this R symbol on product packs, websites and ads, right after the brand name. Tap ® in the copy box to copy it, or press Download PNG for a transparent registered symbol png.
This page explains what the registered mark symbol means, when a business may use it, and the registered trademark symbol keyboard shortcuts for Windows, Mac, Word and phones.
What the Registered R Symbol Means
A trademark is a name, logo or sign that identifies a business's goods or services. When the trademark has been officially registered, the owner may add ® to tell everyone that the mark is legally registered and protected.
In India, trademarks are registered with the Trade Marks Registry. The ® should be used only after the registration is granted. Using ® for a mark that is not registered can be treated as an offence under the Trade Marks Act, 1999. While an application is pending, businesses usually use ™ instead (see the trademark symbol page).
General information only, not legal advice. Check with a trademark professional for your case.
When to Use ® and When Not To
| Situation | Correct mark |
|---|---|
| Brand registered, certificate received | ® |
| Trademark application filed, not yet registered | ™ |
| Brand never applied for | ™ (as a claim) or nothing |
| Book, song, photo or website text | © (copyright, a different right) |
Simple placement rules: put ® right after the brand name, usually small and raised (superscript), for example ChaiKart®. Many companies add it at the first or most visible use on a page and leave it out after that, so the text stays easy to read.
How to Type the Registered Symbol on Keyboard
- Windows: hold Alt and type 0174 on the numeric keypad with Num Lock on. This is the classic registered symbol on keyboard shortcut.
- Mac: press Option+R.
- Microsoft Word: type (r) and AutoCorrect turns it into ®. You can also type 00AE then press Alt+X. To make it superscript, select it and press Ctrl+Shift+=.
- Excel: use Alt+0174, or Insert > Symbol and pick ®.
- Google Docs: Insert > Special characters, then search "registered".
- Android: on most Android keyboards, tap ?123, then =\<, where ® often sits next to ©.
- iPhone: copy it from this page or create a text replacement.
- HTML:
®or®.
More keypad codes are listed on the Alt codes page.
R in Circle Symbol Variants
Several characters look like an R in a circle, but only one is the true registered trademark sign.
| Character | What it is | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| ® | Registered sign (U+00AE) | Registered trademarks |
| ®️ | Same sign shown as an emoji | Chats; looks larger and may be coloured |
| Ⓡ ⓡ | Circled letters R and r | Decorative lists, not trademarks |
| (R) | R symbol text fallback | Plain-text email or old systems |
For packaging, letterheads and websites, always copy the first one, ®. It is the registered symbol text character that search engines and screen readers recognise.
Examples of the R Symbol Trademark Use
- On a product: SpiceRoot® Garam Masala
- In a website footer: "SpiceRoot® is a registered trademark of SpiceRoot Foods Pvt Ltd."
- In an ad headline, at the first mention only
A common mistake is writing "Registered®" or putting ® after the product type ("Masala®") instead of the brand. Another mistake is the confusion between registered nurse symbol searches and ®: nurses write the letters RN after their name, they do not use ®.
For the copyright notice on the same pack, see the copyright symbol guide, and for court and law signs see the advocate symbol page. More signs are in our symbols and signs hub.
Frequently asked questions
What does the R symbol mean on a product?
The ® on a product means the brand name or logo is a registered trademark. The owner has completed registration with the trademark office.
Can I use ® if my trademark application is pending?
No. In India, ® should only be used after the trademark is registered, and wrong use can be an offence. Use ™ while the application is pending. This is general information, not legal advice.
What is the shortcut for the registered symbol?
Alt+0174 on a Windows numeric keypad, Option+R on a Mac, and (r) with AutoCorrect in Microsoft Word.
Should the registered symbol be superscript?
It is usually written small and raised after the brand name, like Brand®. This is a style choice, and many fonts already draw ® at a good size.
Is the trademark registered symbol ® the same as ™?
No. ® means registered, while ™ is only a claim that a name is being used as a trademark. They should not be used together on the same mark.
