The right arrow symbol → points forward, so it usually means "next", "leads to" or "gives". You will see it in school chemistry, in maths, in software instructions such as File → Save, and in bios that point to a link.

The grid above has the plain → plus bolder and longer versions. Tap any one to copy it as text. Below are the meaning of each style, the fastest ways to type the arrow, and a few rules for using it neatly.

What the Right Arrow Symbol Means

The meaning of → depends on the subject, but it always shows movement from one thing to the next.

WhereExampleRead it as
Chemistry2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O"gives" or "forms" (reactants on the left, products on the right)
Maths (limits)x → 0"x tends to 0"
Maths (logic)p ⇒ q"p implies q"
Functionsx ↦ x²"x maps to x squared"
InstructionsSettings → Display → Brightness"open this, then that"
Travel notesMumbai → Pune → Goa"then go to"
Media buttons▶"play"

A forward arrow symbol is also a common way to say "continue" or "next page" in slides and websites.

Right Arrow Symbol Text Styles

All right arrow symbol text characters on this page point the same way, but they look different:

  • Thin and simple: → and the long ⟶. Best for notes, equations and documents.
  • Double: ⇒ and the long ⟹. Keep these for "implies" in maths.
  • Heavy: ➜ ➔ ➡ ➞ ➠. Good for headings, buttons and social bios.
  • Triangle-headed and dashed: ➝ ➟. Light, modern look.
  • Pointers: ▶ ► ➤. Work well as bullets in a list.
  • Outline: ⇨. An open, hollow arrow for diagrams.

If you need both directions in one character, ↔ is the left right arrow symbol. It means "both ways" or "swap", and has its own Alt code (Alt+29).

How to Type the Right Arrow Symbol

  • Windows Alt code: hold Alt and type 26 on the numeric keypad, with Num Lock on. This comes from the old DOS table, so a few apps may not accept it.
  • Pointer ►: Alt+16 in the same way.
  • Word: type 2192, then press Alt+X. Typing --> and a space also turns into → if AutoCorrect is on. For ⇒ use 21D2 then Alt+X.
  • Excel and Google Sheets: =UNICHAR(8594).
  • Mac: there is no Option key shortcut. Use Character Viewer (Control+Command+Space) and search "rightwards".
  • Phone: search "right arrow" in your emoji panel for ➡️, or copy → from this page.

Note that the → key on your keyboard moves the cursor; it does not type the symbol.

Tips for Using → Neatly

  • Leave a space on both sides: "A → B", not "A→B". It is easier to read.
  • In a chemistry answer, use one arrow only between the two sides of the equation.
  • Do not use ⇒ just for decoration in a maths answer, because examiners read it as "implies".
  • In a resume, pick one arrow style for bullets and use it everywhere.
  • Prefer the text arrow over a picture. Use the Download PNG button only if your design app cannot take text.

For the opposite direction, see the left arrow symbol. Arrows pointing up and down are on the up arrow and down arrow pages, and every style is grouped on the main arrow symbols page.
