Here is what the common hand emojis usually mean in Indian chats and around the world:

High five, thumbs up, clap and handshake emoji
Some hand emojis are searched so often that they need their own notes:
- High five emoji: Unicode has no emoji named "high five". People use โ (raised hand) or ๐ (raising hands) for it. Many also send ๐ thinking it is a high five, but its official name is folded hands, and in India it means namaste or thank you. You may see it searched as "hifi emoji" or "highfy emoji"; the answer is the same.
- Thumbs up emoji ๐: one of the original emojis. It means okay, done or good job. A single ๐ as a full reply can feel short or cold to some people, so add a word or two, like "Got it ๐".
- Clap emoji ๐: applause and praise. Some people put ๐ between words for strong emphasis.
- Handshake emoji ๐ค: a deal, agreement or partnership. It is the same emoji whether you search "hand shake emoji" or "handshake".
- Fingers crossed emoji ๐ค: named "Crossed fingers" and added in Emoji 3.0. It means hoping for good luck.
- Finger emoji: โ points up ("one moment"), ๐ and ๐ point right and left ("look here").
- Emoji with hands on head: people usually mean ๐ (arms joined over the head, officially "person gesturing OK") or ๐คฆ (hand on face, a facepalm for "oh no").

Text hands: โ โ โ and the pointing finger symbol
The text hands are older characters from typewriter-style "dingbat" sets. They are handy where emoji look too loud:
- โ โ (pointing right): a finger symbol that draws attention, like "โ Last date: 15 March". Nice in notices, notes and bullet lists.
- โ โ (pointing left): point back to something, e.g. "answer key โ".
- โ (writing hand): great for writers, poets and "notes" headings: "โ Shayari by Aman".
- โ (victory): peace or victory, popular in bios.
- โ (index up): "one moment" or "point to note".
The outline versions (โ โ) and solid versions (โ โ) mean the same thing; pick the one that looks better in your font. Pair them with arrow symbols or a bullet point symbol for neat lists.
Thumbs up symbol and gestures to use with care
The thumbs up symbol ๐ is friendly in India, but hand gestures do not mean the same everywhere. In parts of the Middle East and a few other regions, a thumbs up can be seen as rude. The ๐ sign also has a negative meaning in a few countries. If you are writing to someone abroad, words are safer than gestures.
Some people search for a middle finger symbol. It is an insulting gesture almost everywhere, so we have not included it here. In office chats, keep to ๐, ๐ and ๐.
Hand signs you see in daily life
- Handshake symbol ๐ค: agreement, deal, partnership. Find it by searching "handshake" in your emoji keyboard.
- Hand wash symbol: on clothes labels, a tub of water with a hand in it means wash by hand only. Health posters also show hands under a tap to remind people to wash hands.
- Handle with care symbol: on parcels, a glass shape means fragile, and a pair of hands holding a box is also used for careful handling. These come from packaging labels, not keyboard characters.
- Chandigarh hand symbol: the Open Hand Monument in Chandigarh, designed by Le Corbusier, is a well-known emblem of the city. It shows an open hand, often read as "open to give and open to receive".
- Accessibility sign โฟ: what some people call the handicap symbol is the wheelchair accessibility sign, used for ramps, toilets and parking.
