Many people want to remove emoji from photo files, usually a picture where a ๐ or a heart covers someone's face. Here is the honest truth first: once an emoji is stuck on a photo and the photo is saved or shared, the part under the emoji is gone. No emoji remover, app or website can bring back the real face or text that was hidden.
That does not mean nothing can be done. If it is your own photo, you may still have the original, or you may be able to undo the edit. Editing apps can also cover the emoji area with new, guessed pixels. This guide explains what really works, what an "emoji remover AI" actually does, and how to remove emojis from text, keyboards and chats. For everything else about emojis, visit the emoji hub.
Why an Emoji Remover from Photo Cannot Reveal the Face
A digital photo is a grid of tiny coloured dots called pixels. When an app places an emoji on the photo and saves it, the emoji's pixels replace the photo's pixels in that spot. The old colours are not stored underneath like a second layer. They are simply overwritten.
Think of it like painting over a word on a wall and then taking a new photo of the wall. The new photo only knows about the paint. That is why any website promising a "face emoji remover" that shows the "real" face is either guessing or misleading you. If you see a clear face appear, the app has drawn a new face that looks believable. It is not the person's real face.
The same is true for screenshots of chats, WhatsApp status pictures and Instagram stories that someone else posted with an emoji on top.
How to Remove Emoji from Photo for Real (When It Works)
Removal works when the emoji was never permanently merged, or when the original still exists. Check these in order.
- Before saving: in most photo editors, tap the emoji or sticker and press the delete or bin icon, or use Undo.
- Stories before posting: on Instagram, WhatsApp status and similar apps, drag the emoji to the bin icon at the bottom of the screen before you share.
- Your gallery's edit history: some phone galleries keep the original after an edit and offer a "Revert" or "Revert to original" option. Open the photo, tap Edit, and look for it.
- The original file: check your camera folder, Google Photos or iCloud backups, WhatsApp's sent media folder, or the friend you first sent it to.
- Ask the person who edited it: if a friend added the emoji, they may still have the clean photo.
If none of these work, the clean version does not exist anymore, and you can only cover or fill the area. If you want to replace the emoji with something neater, a plain blur or a different sticker such as a smiley from our smiley symbols page is often the cleanest fix.
What Emoji Remover AI Apps Actually Do
Apps sold as an emoji remover app, a photo emoji remover, an emoji remover online free tool, or a way to "remove emoji from face online" usually use object removal, also called inpainting or AI fill. Here is what happens:
| Step | What the app does |
|---|---|
| 1 | You brush over the emoji. |
| 2 | The app looks at pixels around the brushed area. |
| 3 | It invents new pixels that blend with the background. |
| 4 | You get a smooth patch, not the original content. |
This works nicely when an emoji sits on a plain wall, sky or table. It works badly on faces, text and detailed patterns, because the app has to make them up. Use it for your own photos, for example to remove a sticker you added to a holiday picture. Before uploading private photos to any online tool, read its privacy policy, as your image may be stored on their servers.
Remove Emojis from Text, Chats and Captions
- On phone: place the cursor right after the emoji and press backspace once. Some combined emojis, like family or flag emojis, may need two or more presses because they are made of several characters joined together.
- In Word: open Find and Replace with Ctrl+H, paste the emoji into "Find what", leave "Replace with" empty and click Replace All.
- In Google Docs: use Edit, then Find and replace, the same way.
- Many emojis at once: paste the text into a plain text editor first. Some editors and spreadsheet tools support search patterns that can strip emoji ranges, but test on a copy first.
- WhatsApp status: you cannot edit a posted status. Delete it from My Status and post it again without the emoji.

How to Remove Recently Used Emojis and Emoji Keyboards
Your keyboard's "recent" or "frequently used" row shows what you sent lately. Ways to clear it vary by keyboard and version:
- Gboard and Samsung Keyboard: long-press an emoji in the recent row; some versions show an option to remove it. Clearing the keyboard app's data or learned words in settings also resets the list.
- iPhone: the frequently used emojis reset when you reset the keyboard dictionary in Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, Reset, Reset Keyboard Dictionary. This also clears learned words.
- WhatsApp: WhatsApp keeps its own recent emojis on some phones; they change as you use other emojis.
- Remove an extra emoji keyboard: on iPhone, go to Settings, General, Keyboard, Keyboards, swipe left on Emoji and delete. On Android, turn off unwanted keyboards in Settings under language and input.
To set your keyboard back up later, follow our emoji keyboard shortcuts page. If you want to make your own emoji-style sticker instead, try the emoji maker guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can I remove an emoji from a picture someone else sent me?
You can cover or blur the area, but you cannot get back what was under the emoji. The hidden pixels were replaced when the picture was saved. Only the original, unedited photo has that part.
Does an emoji remover AI show the real face?
No. AI fill tools guess new pixels from the surrounding area. Any face they produce is invented, not the real person, so it should never be treated as real or shared as if it were.
How do I remove an emoji from my own photo?
If you have not saved it yet, tap the emoji and delete it or use Undo. If you saved it, check your gallery for a Revert to original option or look for the original file in your backups.
How do I remove emoji from a WhatsApp status?
Before posting, drag the emoji to the bin icon. After posting, you cannot edit the status, so delete it and upload the photo again without the emoji.
How do I remove emojis from text quickly?
Use backspace for one emoji. For many copies of the same emoji in a document, use Find and Replace in Word or Google Docs and replace the emoji with nothing.
