The jain symbol, called the Jain Prateek, is the shared emblem of the Jain community, showing the universe, the ahimsa hand, the swastik, three dots and a crescent with a dot. Together these parts sum up core Jain teachings about the soul, non-violence and liberation.
No single Unicode character exists for the full emblem, so the grid above gives related characters, clearly labelled, such as 卐 and ✋. For the complete emblem, use an image; the Download PNG button helps for the individual characters.
What Is the Symbol of Jainism?
The Jain Prateek was adopted by the Jain community in the mid-1970s, around the 2,500th Nirvana anniversary of Bhagwan Mahavira. It is accepted across Jain traditions and appears on temples, magazines, wedding cards and community buildings. Before this emblem, the swastik and other auspicious signs were already widely used, and they still are.

Jain Symbol Ahimsa: The Hand and the Wheel
The jain hand symbol is an open palm raised forward, like a gesture that says "stop". It reminds people to pause and think before acting, so that no living being is harmed. This is why many call it the ahimsa symbol of Jainism.
The wheel in the palm stands for the cycle of birth and death that the soul can escape through ahimsa and right conduct. On a phone, ✋ is the closest emoji, and ☸ can stand for the wheel, but neither is the full jain symbol ahimsa hand. A similar raised hand, the abhaya mudra, appears in Buddhist art; see the Buddhism symbol page.
Tirthankara Symbols (Lanchhan)
Each of the 24 Tirthankaras has an emblem, called a lanchhan, carved at the base of their idols so devotees can recognise them. Some well-known ones:
| Tirthankara | Number | Symbol |
|---|---|---|
| Rishabhanatha (Adinath) | 1st | Bull |
| Suparshvanatha | 7th | Swastik |
| Neminatha | 22nd | Conch shell |
| Parshvanatha | 23rd | Snake (serpent) |
| Mahavira | 24th | Lion |
So the 23rd tirthankara of jainism symbol is the snake, and the 24th is the lion.
Jain Flag and Greetings
The Jain flag has five coloured bands, which are explained as standing for the five supreme beings (Pancha Parameshthi), with a swastik in the centre. In daily life, Jains greet each other with "Jai Jinendra" 🙏, and on Mahavir Jayanti or Paryushan people share messages like:
- 🙏 Jai Jinendra 🙏
- 卐 Happy Mahavir Jayanti 卐
- Michhami Dukkadam 🙏 (said at the end of Paryushan to seek forgiveness)
