The bullet point symbol (•) is the round dot placed at the start of each item in a list, so readers can scan points quickly. It is not on the keyboard, but you can type it on Windows with Alt+0149 or Alt+7, and on Mac with Option+8.

For quick bullet symbol copy paste, use the Copy button in the box above, or tap any style in the grid: hollow ◦, squares ▪ ■, arrows ➢, ticks ✓ and more. Each one also has a Download PNG button, so you can get a bullet point symbol PNG with a transparent background for slides and designs. Below are shortcuts for Word, Excel, Google Docs, HTML and phones, plus style ideas for resumes and bios.

How to Type the Bullet Symbol on Windows and Mac

  • Windows Alt code: turn on Num Lock, hold Alt and type 0149 on the number pad, then let go. Alt+7 also gives • in many apps. Alt+0149 is the more reliable one.
  • Other Alt codes: Alt+9 gives ○ and Alt+254 gives ■ in many apps.
  • Mac: press Option+8.
  • Laptop without number pad: press Windows+. to open the emoji and symbol panel, go to the symbols tab, and search or scroll to •. On Mac, Character Viewer opens with Control+Command+Space.

Styles like ◦, ▪, ➢ and ⦿ have no standard Alt code. Copy them from this page, or use the Word code method below.

Bullet Symbol in Word, Excel and Google Docs

Microsoft Word

  1. For a full list, click Home > Paragraph > Bullets. The arrow next to it lets you choose another style, and Define New Bullet > Symbol lets you pick any character, such as ➢ or ✓.
  2. Word also starts a list automatically when you type * and a space at the start of a line.
  3. For a single bullet inside a sentence, type 2022 and press Alt+X. Use 25E6 for ◦ or 27A2 for ➢.

Excel

Excel has no bullet button. Click in a cell, press Alt+0149, add a space and type your text. To put several bullets in one cell, press Alt+Enter to start a new line inside the cell, then add the next bullet.

Google Docs

Use Format > Bullets & numbering > Bulleted list, or press Ctrl+Shift+8 (Command+Shift+8 on Mac). For a single symbol, use Insert > Special characters and search "bullet". Google Slides and Sheets accept a pasted • too.

Bullet Points Symbol on Android, iPhone and WhatsApp

  • Android: on most Android keyboards, tap ?123, then =\<; the • is usually on that page.
  • iPhone: tap 123, then #+= to find •.
  • WhatsApp, Instagram and other apps: the simplest way is to paste • at the start of each line. Copy it once from this page and it stays in your clipboard.

Tip: for a neat list in a message, start each line with • and one space, and keep each point short.

HTML Bullet Symbol and CSS Lists

On websites, you have two ways to show bullets:

  • Real lists: use the <ul> and <li> tags. Browsers add bullets automatically. In CSS, list-style-type: disc gives •, circle gives a hollow ◦ and square gives ▪.
  • A single bullet in text: the HTML code is &bull; or &#8226;. Example: Home &bull; About &bull; Contact shows Home • About • Contact.

The info table under the grid also lists the CSS code for each bullet style, which is handy for ::before content.

Bullet Styles for Resumes, Notes and Bios

UseSuggested bulletsExample
Resume or CV• or ▪• Managed a team of 5 sales staff
Sub-points◦ or ‣ under •◦ Handled Mumbai and Pune region
Checklists☐ and ✓☐ Pay electricity bill / ✓ Book train ticket
Presentations➢ or ◆➢ Sales grew in Q2
Instagram bio● ◇ ▫● Delhi ◇ Foodie ▫ Traveller

Keep one style per level in formal documents. Mixing many shapes looks untidy. For more tick and box marks, see the tick symbol page; for arrow bullets, try right arrow symbol. A plain dot that ends a sentence is the full stop symbol, which sits on the baseline and is smaller than the bullet dot symbol. For more marks, see our punctuation marks guide and symbol names list.
