The comma symbol (,) is the small curved mark that tells a reader to take a short pause inside a sentence: After lunch, we went to the market. It sits on the key to the right of M on every English keyboard.

Comma Rules for School with Examples
- Items in a list: Bring a pen, a ruler, an eraser and a notebook. A comma before the final "and" (the serial or Oxford comma) is optional; follow your teacher's style.
- After an introductory word or phrase: However, the exam was postponed. Yes, I have the file.
- Before a direct quote: Mother said, "Switch off the fan."
- When calling someone by name: Ravi, please come here. Compare Let's eat, Dadi. with Let's eat Dadi. One small comma changes the meaning completely.
- Joining two full sentences with and, but, or, so: It was raining heavily, so the match was cancelled.
- Around extra information: My uncle, who lives in Surat, is a chartered accountant.
- In dates and addresses (US style): August 15, 1947; Indian style usually writes 15 August 1947 without a comma.
Commas in Numbers: Indian vs International System
India groups digits in lakhs and crores, while most other countries group in thousands and millions.

In the Indian system, the first comma comes after three digits from the right, then after every two digits. Both are correct; choose the one your reader expects. Indian bank and school documents use 1,00,000, while international reports use 100,000.
In Excel, the thousands separator follows your computer's region settings. With the region set to English (India), the Comma Style button groups numbers the Indian way. Note that many European countries use the comma as a decimal mark (3,5 means 3.5), so check before reading foreign price lists.

Common Comma Mistakes
- Comma splice: I was tired, I went to sleep. Two full sentences need a full stop, a semicolon, or a joining word: I was tired, so I went to sleep. The semicolon symbol page explains the second option.
- Comma between subject and verb: The girl in the red dress, is my sister. Remove the comma.
- Space before a comma: write apples, mangoes, not apples , mangoes.
- Missing space after: always leave one space after a comma in sentences.
